Which starter motor?

Post by danbeier »

Starter motor on way out - had to call RAC today as wasn't starting, but managed to get going with a firm tap from a metal pole...

Anyway, going to get a replacement probably from GSF or somewhere- the guy from RAC said there are 2 types - shielded / unshielded if I remember correctly...just wondered if anyone knew which one it would be for a 1984 Scirocco Storm or could it be either?

Reg number B998MJC if that helps. Thanks.

if it's just sticking, why not just strip it, clean it, grease it and put it back on. loads cheaperer

Not v experienced when it comes to things like that...only got a shared gravel courtyard as potential workspace too at moment so tend to go for the easy option!

Get it tested by a local auto-electrician first - and he may also be able to strip and re-build it for you. Cost me about £35 earlier this year when my GTX starter began playing up.

disconnect battery, disconnect starter wiring, 2 bolts hold starter on.

they are very simple to strip, haynes explains it all quite well

Got this prob with the wife`s goof, had a new one fitted earlier this year, and it has started (or not) to go wrong again, broke down in Cambridge yesterday,so i had to go and rescue her.Hit it with hammer, stuck it in 2nd rocked it backwards and forwards,it started, this morning at 5.30 she came and woke me up,and it won`t start again, just clicks, did the hammer trick, but was too early to be banging with a hammer outside neighbours at that time.so had to leave it.
Have heard don`t bother with anything other than a Bosch one, gotta take it off and clean everything this arvo, one on the roc was playing up,but cleaned that up and it`s been fine since.
Starting to despise her goof, been nothing but trouble

At last it`s sorted !!

Car would not start Thurs morn,i was out smacking the motor at 6 am,but had to stop to avoid peeing off the neighbours, motor that was fitted was still under warranty,so i called the garage thur arvo, and got it booked in,bumped her off and followed to garage, typically it started the 6 or so times they tried it ! But as they know me the still swapped it under warranty.
So the wife goes to work Thursday eve-,and i think great it`s all sorted now,no chance of her calling me to come and rescue her !!! So i had a few beers when i got in from work...

How wrong could i be,i got a call at 9.30 pm saying it won`t start again !!! :ire: Explained that i couldn`t drive, bang went the phone as she slammed it down !!
She had to call recovery, who got there at 10 pm,put a meter over the main starter lead, and said it was fooked,so he started her and she got home, rather late and annoyed.
I got up again at 6am on the Friday, and took the lead off my roc ,came to taking the lead out of the battery terminal on the goof, and guess what ??
Whoever fitted the lead, didn`t bother to strip off the outer sleeve of the cable, one securing screw had not pierced the sleeve, and the other was barely making contact !!1 It`s been 11 months of constant nightmare, all down to the most basic task of stripping the wire !!!!
