Aren't they just there to protect the tweeters?
Unfortunate that your speaker came to bits but I've done this to several sets of speakers for the front and rear and never had a problem.

Sometimes the cone comes away, sometimes not. I tend to silicone seal round the edge with a needlepoint attatchment to ensure it stays put. If you're careful it won't affect the sound. JBLs have this ring too.

Just fitted these in mine:


Good fit and no problems. (might have to space off the rear grille a bit but easy to do).

Nice they look great mate!!! I was expecting to have to take the doorcards off to get at the speakers but by your pics it just looks like the grilles come off - even better!!!!
