buzzing only on radio

Post by james butler »

i get a buzzing sound comming through my radio but doesnt do it when you play a cd. the buzzing changes pitch with revving the engine as well.
i changed the leads ages ago, the old ones were cracked so i replaced them with cheap copper ones. i went to vw and they use graphite ones to prevent the buzzing (apparently) but at £25 a lead i wasnt impressed, hence the cheaper ones. iv checked all my earths to no avail and even fed another live to the radio.
im sure its interferance but not sure where from.

It's more than likely the radio earthing to the chassis instead of through the wiring. Check and make sure there aren't any pinched wires in the loom off the radio, including the aerial wire.

is it a clicking sort of buzz or a humming sort of buzz?

the first would suggest interference from the ignition. this may be down to an earthing problem as mentioned, or could be due to excessive sparking inside the dizzy (badly corroded or pitted contacts) or from incorrect component being fitted. if all checks out ok, you could try fitting a suppressor to the supply to the radio

the second would suggest from the alternator, most likely worn or damaged brushes creating sparks.

i'd guess something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/altai-10A-noise-s ... 500wt_1182 may well be the solution...

its a regular fast clicking, the alternator is brand new and it did this before i bought the new alternator. odly enough it started doing this when i plugged my ipod into the stereo while it was on charge. that seemed to start it off could that have damaged something inside the radio and cause buzzing?

bought a new stereo and this one doesnt buzz. must be sumthing wrong with the old one. i was talking to the guy who sold me the new radio and he was saying theres a filter inside the radio for the incoming signal from the radio ariel which is easily damaged if it gets hot. hence wont filter out static or interferance form the engine bay once damaged. suppose ide better be carefull next time.
