Steering Rack - Dismantling / Refurbing?

Right... as most of the parts on my motor are coming off over the coming weeks back to bare shell... I am going to be bulk powder coating everything within an inch of it's life... including the steering rack if possible.

Hints and tips on stripping it down? Haynes is unsurprisingly scant on the subject, and obviously they aren't (as far as I'm aware) high wear items that need replacing...

i didnt think you could take these apart. most of the internal bushes/bearings are pressed in making removal dificult. allthough not impossible, after all you can get exchange steering racks quite cheap so their must be a way to do it.

Yeah, and in reality you can get new steering racks at a reasonable price. Looks like we're going down that route! :)

I do not think that is just a bolt in replacement.

I believe you have to dismantle the original rack to fit the new rack and the pinion bearing. There is a thread on ClubGTi about the Quaife kits and the TWO different pinion bearing sizes.

In fact, I think someone on here had a problem with the size of the bearing he was supplied with, and had to source one from Holland, I think it was.

Just phoned my local dealership to compare prices with new. They're ONLY £499 inc VAT, I'm gonna get 2 at that price!!

I believe you CAN rebuild them, as the Club GTI quickrack buy was just the rack and pinion gear, so the racks had to be rebuilt with the new parts. Having said that, I've never done it.

I noticed on TSR's website that they were selling Quaife Quickrack kits - I think they had them listed for a Mk1/Rocco. Give them a call if you're interested in a sportier drive, and if you've got the muscles to turn the wheel.

They don't call me Mr Universe for nothing mate... well, technically incorrect, they don't call me Mr Universe at all, despite me telling "them" to.

I'm not overly bothered about having a quicker rack, my motor aint a track toy... more a stylish grunty cruiser (if I was 19 and the wife would let me I'd be hanging around in Morrisons Carpark on a Friday night chucking Maccy D's fries at equally louty fellows) but a nice newish (so to speak) one going back in would be perfect. It's not that there's anything wrong with mine, but I'd hate to stick it all back together then have to take the rack back out to replace it, after all it is one of hte simpler jobs on a low slung rocco.

GSF and ECP both do refurbed racks, so to save on the hassle that's possibly the route I'm going down

What are there prices like for the refurb'd racks mate ?

Actually just had a quick look on ECP's site, looks like there £70-80 + vat, thats without trade discount too..

Make sure that you get the right one, some are exchange only, some are outright buy :) (thinks the one on GSF is £80ish and outright buy)
