Starting issue

Post by #Riggs# »

Hello
Ok heres a strange story i hope somebody can end for me.
1983 A reg mk2 Rocco 1800 injection dx
Fully serviced
Starts fine first time in the day, ticks over at about 950/975rpm's
Drives fine then after about 15 to 20 odd miles the tick over speeds up to around 1100rpm's its starts to pink as you accellerate...timing issue?
Then to add to the problem if I stop for 5mins or more the thing just fights like mad to start.but once started it will start everytime.but once again if I leave it for 5mins or more the thing just struggles to start.

Hope someone can help.

without looking at it, it's only going to be guess work, but check the ignition timing is correct (rotor arm should line up with line on dizzy case at tdc no1 firing to get you somewhere near)

then you're probably going to be looking at warm up regulator or cts

What petrol are you using? If its normal unleaded then you will get pinking under accelleration if the timing has not been changed. Its better to use super unleaded 97 RON or even better 98 RON, normal unleaded is only 95 RON

Having the wrong fuel mixture can mess starting/idling etc up and can cause pinking.
Would have a quick look at plugs to see if they are running the correct colour/condition - should be light tan colour at end.

Just a thought.

Ok chaps
Thank you for your tips and advice.
After loads of reading and investigating the car better. It appears that the throttle body has loast "yes lost" the throttle stop screw (which should be fixed factory fitted with a big glob of yellow piant on it)Also the airscrew in the throttle body has been screwed so far in its jamed in and cant be moved. So obviosley i need to get another throttle body...

Thanks all I will keep you all posted but for now I'm off to the "Parts Wanted section to find a new throttle body hopefully untampered with"
