If you mean an Oil Pressure Gauge, yes , it will work, but you will need to get the matching VDO sender - 5 or 10 bar - depending on which gauge you get.

The standard VW pressure sender will not work the VDO gauge.

If you also want to retain the oil pressure warning light in the dashboard, you will need to get the 2 pin sender, rather than the single pin one.

The new VDO sender replaces the low pressure sender in the gearbox end of the cylinder head.

Audi do a pressure sender to match the VDO gauge.

Is it for oil pressure or temperature?

I have retro fitted to an EX engine and have a DX now so I can look into it for you. ;)

As PeteGLi said. Also make sure the gauge is electric not mechanical (wires or oil capillary which takes an oil feed direct to the gauge) and its operating range matches that of the sender. i.e. 0-5 Bar or 0-10 Bar. Gauge and sender must match.

The gauge should have 3 wires excluding the illumination. These should be an earth, positive and gauge feed usually marked "G". This needs connecting to the sender. The sender has two connections. One to replace the low pressure warning which is your existing wire connection at the side of the head. The second is to be connected to your gauge "G".

Take out your old low pressure warning sender on the right side of your cylinder head. Then, install your sender. Re-connect your low pressure warning wire. Then start your car. The oil warning should flash for about two to three seconds then go out. If it is wrong then it will continue to flash along with a horrible buzzing sound. If this is so then simply switch the wire to the other connector.

Then run your gauge feed to the sender and connect to the second connection on the sender.

Back in the car run a wire to your ignition side of your fuse box. There are some spare feeds on the back rights side as you look at it. Then from the earth on the gauge to the to the earth next to your fuse box.

All you need to do now is tap off your instrument lighting. There is a feed on the radio wiring normally Blue/grey. You can also pick up an earth from the radio wiring as well to connect your gauge lamp.

Job done. It should all now work. :good:
