NEW Fuel pump making noise??

Hi all,

I have just picked up my car from a garage that has tried fixing problems with my car jerking (when trying to accelerate) and stalling when coming to a stop. Also the fuel pump was making an horrendous noise. This all came about through what I think was the fuel filler neck corroding and getting crud into the system.

The garage has said they have fitted a new fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel filler neck and flushed the system.

The guy also recommended me put in some fuel injection cleaner (which I have).

Picked the car up tonight and it seems like I have the same problems.....and the fuel pump is still making the same sort of sound it was before....

Should / can a new fuel pump be making this noise. What are the possibilities apart from it not being a new fuel pump?

...and second, anyone any ideas what else it could be.....could it be that it just needs a run in before it settles down again?

There is also a lift pump in the tank which can make the main fuel pump under the car make alot of noise.
Did the garage look at that fuel pump?
They are about £25 from GSF
I think there must be a thred on here somewhere about checking the pump or replacing it.

Do you know how easy it is to replace the lift pump....is it a labour intensive thing....not something I could do so I'd take it to my local VW garage. Is it likely to cost me lots in labour?

Took my fuel lift pump out last week. Straight forward job, further info in here

Basically, remove rear bench, undo 3 screws on the inspection plate. Remove power and the fuel lines. I then used a steel bar n hammer to rotate the pump to release then lifts straight out.

Sure other have done this as well.

Hi all,

I've been looking on GSF car parts for a lift pump for a Scirocco Scala '89.

Do you know which part it is I need because there is nothing called a lift pump in their list of parts....anyone know of the part number (I know there have been others on this forum who have purchased the part from GSF)....

It looks like part no. 18389 Fuel Pump In Tank on the GSF website. It's listed for 1.8 injection Sept 84 onwards (earlier than this they are gravity fed so don't have one). They are very straightforward to replace as per the post above. I replaced both in my GTX and the main one is still quite noisy - although it has always run ok.
. It does sound like dirt in the fuel though. I'd be inclined to take it back to garage and get them to have another look - at their expense of course!! Good luck.
