Two types of upper benches?!

Post by jbo »

Hi All,

I have just taken the "not very well fitted" mk1 rear seat out my 86' 16v. My plan was to installl the one from my 8v but noticed a difference. The 8v has four bolts moutned to the chassis just in front of the seat belt buckle bolt. The 16v has nothing.

Were there two types? A 50/50 folding and a full folding? Or has the previous owner decided to cut out the bolts and smooth them over?

Yes, GTXs were fitted with a 50:50 split/fold rear seat. Most other models had a one-piece seat in the back. Cars not fitted with the split/fold seat from the factory don't have the middle bracket.

No, as far am I'm aware it was only a few models. Someone might correct me on this, but from memory:

GTX
GTL (at least, mine did)
GTi
(not sure if Storm leather is split fold)

Scalas, GTs, GTIIs all had the one-piece. I don't know if it was possible to specify it as a factory option (which would confuse things slightly).

You could weld in your own bracket, but this would involve dropping out the back axle and fuel tank for safety.

Thats right Jason, when I removed my single back bench from my GT2 and replaced it with the 50/50 splits from a storm, I was missing the plate and so the seats lift a little (in the centre) when splitting. However you can put a plate in to rectify this (so im told) :beers:

Storms have split folding rear seats as well. I saw a GT at the Scottish Volksfest, that had the GTX interior fitted, the girl who owned it said she fitted a plate that she made, looked a good job.

Hmmmm a plate you say? TO be honest a 50/50 split doesnt really matter to me. I would rather the corrrect type be fitted. I wouldnt normally care but i want this to be a good build with no rattles or work arounds.

I need to find a whole decent interior. Any of you good people want to swap a decent non 50/50 rear benched interior for my mk1 leather?

I cant find a decent interior to buy or swap. I cant drive my car at the mo ha lol
