Possible windscreen leak

Post by philiano »

Hi all
I've had a leak in the front of my 91 GT2. I'm 99% sure its from the windscreen, but I don't want to fork out 70 quid to fix it if the leak isn't coming from the screen.
A mate looked at it, and said if it were up to him, he'd put some sealant under the windscreen rubber. Anyone know if this will work? Or has anyone had this problem?

Thanx
Phil

It may work, but only if the windscreen rubber is dry in the gap where you intend to seal, otherwise your wasting your time.

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

FROST do a sealer for dosed old rubbers, kinda like superglue meant to fill in any cracks or gaps. Check their online catalogue.......... if you use it and it's good let me know  polo has similar issues atm!

hi, have a play here - http://sciroccoregisterforum.co.uk/faq/

i always recommend people to clear the scuttle area and to check grommets on bulkhead behind glovebox visible when you remove the plastic cover.
check seal around heater motor too.
cracks in the plastic cover sometimes allow water to drip into wrong area.

I'm having the same problem, and it's leaking into the fusebox. Been waiting for weeks for the weather to improve before trying to use a sealant, as it all has to be dry for the sealant to work. It's just gaffer taped at the moment and still leaking a bit.
I've been advised to try roofing sealant as you can use it in wet conditions and it still dries ok. I'm a bit worried it might damage the paintwork though. Has anyone ever tried it? I've just bought some Geocel Roofers Mate from the diy shop because I figure it's better to get the car watertight even if it damages the existing seal, but I'm a bit apprehensive about my paintwork.
