whats useful from the vag range?

hi all new rocco owner and member here but no stranger to the dub scene ;)

will hopefully be taking delivery of my rocco on saturday and just after a bit of advice.....

It's a 91' plate gt2 so as i'm sure your all aware its a 1.8 8v carb lump its a non runner and has no mot. basically i wanna know what parts are salvagable from other members of the vag range? when i went to look at the car i forgot to write down the engine code but it looks very similar to the gx (i think) lumps found in mk1 cabbies (i'm an ex mk1 owner of 3 years so know em' pretty well) am i right in assuming this? any light people can shed on this would be appreciatted.....

obviously body panels are no good but what bout filler necks i think i read somewhere mk1 filler necks can be shortened to fit, suspension, brakes (i'm assuming these will be the same as on some mk2S?), exhausts? anything really..... just fill me with your rocco knowledge please!

Welcome along pal. I'm not exactly an expert but I'm learning a hell of a lot from here. I think I'm right in assuming the mk2 roc is based on a mk1 golf so most mechanicals are interchangeable as you rightly said. There's usually quite a lot popping up in the 'for sale' section on here too. A mk1 filler neck will easily fit with a bit lopped off the end or if you want a life-long fix to the dreaded 'filler neck problem' there's tips and guides to the manipulation of a plastic beamer neck in the FAQ section (something I hope to do soon).

Post some pics when you can, I to am a GTII owner so I'm interested to have a gander.

cheers matey! yeah i've noticed the thread bout using a bm filler neck so i might give that a go! as for pics i'm picking the car up tommorow so will pop some up in the afternoon. it aint in fabulous condition as its been sat for the last two years so bodywork is a bit faded, interior is mint and everything under the bay has surface rust but for £100 you cant complain!

You'll probably find the FAQ pages on the main website pages useful.

As above, suspension components are all mkI Golf compatible. MkII Golf bits are generally useless.

Engine in a GTII will be EX. Budget for a Weber carb conversion if it doesn't already have one.

i'm working on a really tight budget at the mo so weber is out the question for the time being but something i was considerin for the future anyway. new it was a something x code engine they are the same as whats in a mk1 cabbie yes? what about brakes are they the same as mk1 gtis?

Bargain!! Just a note on the weber conversion, if you do decide to go for one there are plenty popping up on ebay and here. I just got one for a little less than you paid for the whole car...but compared with webers full price, its pretty good!

the annoying thing bout getting the car so cheap is it makes bits seem really expensive ! not sure i'll ever get round to doing a webber conversion as my mate has offered me his kr lump for £40!! I'm turning into the king of bargains! i'm bidding on a filler neck for a mk1 on ebay at the mo and winning with a bid of £6 so hopefully i'll win that and it will be something to add to the list of bargains .

any tips on starting a car that has sat for a while would be appreciatted too !

Tips on starting the car...

Exchange £40 for lump, place lump in car, affix and turn key. Apart from that I have no clue, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to explain...

haha! i'm gonna run it on the 8v lump for a while while i collect all the bits for the kr conversion but that hasn't run for 6 months and it was 1 1/2 when it ran before that....

Welcome along Rusty. I have rcently bought a mk2 GTX that has stood for 8 years, before starting it I turned it over with a spanner on the crank pulley to make sure everything was free, then when I was happy it seemed ok, I fitted a charged battery and cranked it on the starter but with the coil lead off, just to get the oil flowing. Then reconnected the coil lead, cranked it over and it started after a couple of turns !

just picked it up today and had the wagon driver try and buy it off me all the way home! nice one dude i know the engine aint siezed so will prime it with oil and fuel and see if the beastie fires up tommorow. will pop some pics up tommorow when theres some light to take some decent pics! thanks for all the advice so far fellas!
