Warm start problem

Post by dozzum »

When my GTi has been sat for about 45 minutes to an hour after driving it is difficult to start. If i just turn the key then it fires up then it dies and refuses to start for ages or unless i bump it. If I rev it when i start it then it runs like its on 3 cylinders for a bit until i rev it loads.
There is a faint petrol smell from inside the engine bay, so I'm leaning to either at lease 1 injector not closing and leaking into the cylinder and flooding it or a loss of pressure in the system somewhere else.

It starts first time every time from cold.

When i get chance im going to check for fuel leaks somewhere and to check the injectors in a jam jar to see if they are closing properly.

Does any of that make sense or am i barking up the wrong tree entirely???

I would also guess your injectors are leaking. How old are they and how many miles have they done?

not a clue, could be original. Seen a set of recon"Hi flow" Audi 80 ones for £80 on fleabay but cant afford that really especially if its not the cause of the fault.

What happens if you turn the key a few times to prime the system before starting when its hot? does the noise of the pump change as you do that and pressure builds up?
If it does it's likely to be fuel vaporisation in the supply line which would suggest pump check valve or accumulator.

Also could be worth checking your cold start valve isn't leaking or running constantly.

I've had this on my scala: and I had two different causes:

1. After the fuel pump there is a fuel vaccum thingy (not a reservoir) this could have gone wrong - replacement would be required.
2. Split in a pipe / fuel line will cause the pressure to drop

Thus for some reason if it was cold, it would start first time every time, and if it was warm (not just turn off and on again in 5 mins) I'd sit there forever wearing the starter motor out.

Four Sciroccos, four gone, but at least I know all parts from most current one went to good homes....
