1985 Scirocco GTX

Post by millsy20 »

I bought this car in October from Niell Baker (Kariba on the forum). I had to just look at the car until the end of October because I couldnt afford to insure it. During this time, however, I decided to do a couple bits to the car that needed doing. The first was to fix a pudding stiring gear linkage and find out where an oil leak was coming from. I found that the sump had a nice dent in it so I replaced that thinking it was the source of the leak. I found out that it was only part of the leak and that the oil temperature sender was leaking so I replaced that from the EX engine that I had laying around from the project GT2. I then decided to put a set of Mk2 golf GTi steels that i had sitting around with good tyres on. I have also replaced the badly cracked dash that was in the car when I bought it with one that was supplied with the car.

So to a couple of pictures:

Plans for this car are to drive it around as it is for the time being. Then once Ive finished my GT2 I am going to try and find a crossflow 2.0 8v engine and fit a set of bike carbs to it. Source an original interior for it and replace the torn headlining and find the elusive sunroof panel for the headlining. Sort out a bit of corrosion on the rear drivers side quater panel. Replace the damaged bonnet and refinish the leading edges of the front wings. Finally replace the front passenger side part of bodykit on the wing.

I gave the car a pre MOT check last weekend so I could sort out the bits that werent going to pass. Heres a list of what needs sorting:
Off side front spot insecure
Rear lights needed replacing
near side track rod end needs replacing
near side rear arch leading edge needs welding
new rear exhaust hanger
Bonnet needs sorting.

I started to do some prep work for the welding to be done so I'm taking off the body kit to check for other rust while I'm at it.

Heres what I found under the kit on the drivers side.

Bottom of the door in the middle

The hole on the near side arch

Im thinking about leaving the body kit off so this needs to be painted Flash Silver.

I have got the rear light courtesy of LEEP on here and the track rod. Im going to be making myself a long grill and get rid of the spots.

Ill put some more pics tomorrow when I've finished taking off the body kit.

As promised I have taken the body kit off of the passengers side. This side was the one with the hole on.

This is what I found:

I found another hole at the rear of wheel arch as well

Also found a hole in the bottom of the front wing behind the wheel arch. So now I need a new wing.

Ill hopefully have the rear arches sorted tomorrow.

Hi mate, I am going to take my kit off soon to check the state of the rust that I know is there on my rear arch. How easy was the kit to get off with all the adhesive.....Also be interested to know what you do to sort the rust mate.

Cheers and good luck with it

The body kit wasnt too hard to get off but I would recomend that you do it when its warmer than it is at moment. The hardest parts to get off are the arch flares because they are stuck on. Check the Haynes for fixing points of the body kit its very accurate.

I had a mate whos a mobile mechanic who used to work for a bodyshop come over and sort the welding this weekend on the rear arches.

Firstly the arch with the two holes:

The arch with surface rust and a small hole:

These were just a quick repair for the MOT and I will be doing a proper repair on them once I have the MOT sorted. My mate just beat some metal to the correct shape of the arch and welded them in place.

I'm getting a pair of NOS pattern front wings next weekend from Weirdsubzero and I will be doing a few bits on it tomorrow for the MOT. When I get the wings swapped over I'm going to use the arches on the front and cut the old bits of the rear arch and weld these into place like Markh did on 21A.

Quick Update:

Got a bonnet of GTXRA and a pair of NOS pattern wings from weirdsubzero. I plan on getting them in primer ready for Spring Fest mext weekend and fill and paint the rear arches and bottom of the drivers door. I fitted one of the wings to get it through its MOT at the start of march and made myself a long grill from a golf mk2 badgless grill.

Ill get some photos of them on the car once I have finished tomorrow.

Got the drivers side wing, door and rear arch sorted as well as the passengers side rear arch. Just got them all in primer for the time being until I have enough money to get it to a body shop to Have a full respray.

Heres a couple pics from a couple weeks ago when I changed the passengers side wing:

These were taken today after I got everything sorted.

The drivers side front wing had to be reshaped slightly so that it could fit properly and the arches ar ent completely smooth but they will be ok for the time being.
