91 GT2

Hey,

II'l begin with a bit of an introduction to me and then to the cars(s)

I'm Tim, I'm 25 and located down in sunny somerset,

I bought a Mars red 92 GT2 back in july of lasy year and loved every second of it, including bringing it to the meet at cosford, a track day at Colerne and a trip to GTI spring festival where i put in a not too shabby 17.3 with terminal just over 80MPH.
Sadly this love affair was cut short when i decided to go flying in it. The incident took me from road level down an 8' drop into a field, and given i was doing about 40MPH at the time, i cleared 15' into said field.
I won't post pictures, but you can immagine it's a bit bananananana shaped.

so i did the sensible thing, and bought it back off the insurance for parts.
then i did the stupid thing of buying a Volvo s40 :(

but ...

now less than 6 months on from the crash, i've aquired a 91 GT2 in metalic blue (dont know the name of the colour)

Which is currently sat on my drive with no engine in.

and so the story commences.

I'll upload pictures into this later, as i cant get them on while at work.

I've taken the siezed engine out of the Blue one, and removed the perfect engine from my right off, magically only the rad was damaged in the incident (well and my back) so it's still running bob on.

Both engines are sat in my garage and i started last night with a strip and clean of the running engine which should be going back in 3 weeks from now.

so there we are, watch this space for updates, and pictures later.

and hope to see you all again at events next year in it.

Engine swaps in the rain can be so tedious, GO GO GADGET UMBRELLA!



Along the way i needed somewhere to put the siezed engine, so ...



and the good engine now sat on a stand (the wrong way as the stand's clamps wouldn't reach over the flywheel) ready for strip and clean.



So, now i'm working to a tight deadline, as i intend on driving her to my parents for christmas, which gives me 4 weeks to strip and rebuild the engine, then refit it, and swap over ...

Electric windows (as the new one dont have them),
Clocks (so the milage matches the engine),
Coilovers (assuming they didn't get damaged in the crash, first inspections they all look ok),
Brake servo (new one is rusty, old one is spotless),
Front disks (brand new on old car 2 weeks before crash),
Rear disk conversion (time permitting),
sourse and fit a bra (temporary cover up of stonechips till i can afford to have the bonnet sprayed),
tidy up drivers door (where some numpty decided to put on the door protectors *or should i call them rust creators*),


tall ask for 4 weeks, but i'm up for a challenge,

watch this space for the rims i'm having refurbed for her too, cant find anything about them on the interweb, made by a belgium company called Kiwi, the rims are "Kiwi Rush" 14 by 6 far as i remember. very similar in style to ones fited to the old skoda rapid.

Progress on the engine



Little bit to finish it, and it's on to the gearbox next.

have friday off, so weather permitting, it will be back in and connected up by sunday.

Just need to get hold of one of those "get them grrrr nasty C shape Exhaust thingy claps on" tools.

you can use a exhaust clamp to open the c clamps on exhaust

got one of them on order in the end, as i'm bound to need it again.

Engine is all done now, no picture tho.

will be heading back into the engine bay on saturday morning, and it's going to start first time honest , so all being well will have pictures up saturday evening.

If someone can explain how these things work, I'd be grateful. I bought one but couldn't work out how to use it (seems to be stuck in position - I'd assumed it's meant to expand and contract by turning the bolts at either end).

PROGRESS!

swapped over 3 out of 4 suspension units today, the O/S rear refused to come off, so i'll hit it harder with a bigger hammer tomorrow.

also gave the gearbox a final clean and detail ready to go back in tomorrow morning.

Would love to be posting that the car started first time i turned the kay after the engine refit, but sadly it was on the second turn of the key :(

firsty turn illustrated that cylinder 4's HT lead was not connected propperly and so was having to jump a considerable gap before getting to the plug.

fixed that and a blip of the throttle and away she went :) woop.

sadly tho, no MoT, as the rear brakes are giving me grief. have had to cut the end and order new fittings and a flaring tool to sort it out. so driving it 130 mile on saturday is looking im-probable, but not im-possible :)

will update with some engine bay and exterior pictures later in the week.

I assume of course the more compact basket makes for working on it easier.
