Hi all
We have just got a 1988 sirocco scala auto, i have replaced the fuel pump and i have replaced the filler neck pipe with the bmw E36 one.
this mornning i got it to the mot station without it cutting out, great i thought it was the fuel pump then, he flew through the mot no probs. :D but on the way home he cut out three times it dont run rough or splutter before it cuts it just loses all power wont rev and dies :( i have to wait for ten mins before he will start again. could anyone tell me what the prob could be please. jen

Re: cutting out
Hi Jen, is it a carb model car ? How bad was the filler neck corrosion ? Its possible that theres still dirt, rust or water in the fuel tank from the filler neck problem. If you take out the lower part of the back seat and remove the circular inspection cover , you can whip out the fuel sender and have a look in the tank for any signs of contamination, also check out the fuel pick up for signs of blockage. If it is a carb car, then make sure the fuel filters clean, its also possible that theres dirt in the carb, it maybe worth whipping the jets out and giving them a blast of carb cleaner spray.
The ignition module (hall sender) can cause a similar problem too.
I have a similar problem with an 1984 1.6 carb GT im working on, but havent got round to sorting the running problem yet.
Hope this helps.

find part number if you dont already have it and then phone VW Dealer who MAY be able to trace one via the UK dealer network - thats what i did back in the summer to get one.
cant remember my log in on this machine so cant quote part number - your are looking for a fuel gauge sender for ex/carbed engined scirocco <1984.
they do crack easily.......................

Hi gtxtra
i have found one £28.00 with post, now im fishing with a magnet in the tank, can see grainy bits but the magnet just wont pick them up, did try draining the tank with a pipe and sucking but got fed up with drinking the petrol. I dont wont to drain it from under the car as the hose was a bitch to get back on. jen

avoiding halford yoof go to your local motor factors and get a syphon hand pump device - basically it's two pipes (one goes into filler neck or tank opening and the other goe into a jerry can) merging into one with a hand pump on one end - couple of quid , fiver tops.

Re: cutting out
if you end up wit rusty bits left in the tank, chuck the magnet in and leave it in there. the rust, plus any more you acquire from filling station tanks, will stick to it
Re: cutting out

Re: cutting out
unscrew them and blow thru them with carb cleaner. don't poke anything down them as they wear easily and are very precisely made
