anyone know if this recall is still happening? or can I check to see if mine has ben done? no issues at the moment but it's one of those things worth knowing, y'know?

if it hasn't got a strengthening panel already Nick then just get one - word is that the GSF Golf one suitably cut down is a better bet than the one they did for the rocco.

Yup - what he said. You have to cut a couple of V shaped slots out of it, for the vac hose and one of the cables, from memory.

is it immediately obvious to look at with the bonnet up? and is it an engine out job to weld the plat in place if it's not there already?

nope it comes with heavy duty 'glue' - clean up the area then affix. it's only really there as a load spreading device.

welding only required if a full blown metal failure/tear - scalinj had this occur a while back

After prepping my engine bay this week, it looks like it could do with something being done :roll:
