KR engine (mk2 golf 16v) how easy to fit

Post by sidewalkdave »

Basicly i want some more power out of my scirocco and ultimately would like to do a few trackdays
I have looked into tuning the standard dx engine and it seems i can get alot more bang for buck by fitting the mk2 golf 16v gti engine then having a look into modifications.
So my questions are.....
1.How easy is the conversion (its going into an injected scala) does the wiring look have to be changed? Will my gearbox match the KR engine?
2.what would people recomend tuning wise for the 16v i want power and reliabilty, i was thinking bigger cams and maybe some headwork

any tips or pointers would be appreciated

will need some minor wiring to the ignition control unit...
fuel pipe and airbox will need modifiying as it is on the other side on a golf
I am going to do this to my injection scirocco

mounts will be the same, ideally you would use the 16v box and 100mm driveshafts...yours may already have
these though.
rad 16v golf or better, someone has used a mk2 diesel rad as it is big.
may have to change the distributer cap....

Easy swap into an injected car. Pulley and front snubber mounts need to be swapped over from the original 8 valve to the 16v KR. In the Golf/Jetta 2 it sits on a subframe.

Use an ABF right angled dizzy cap to clear the brake m/c.

You can retain your eight valve injection engine loom to plug into the KR for the senders, WUR, 5th injector etc, but you will require the KR ignition loom/TCI boxes to make it run right. Some folks bin the ISV as it is a pain in the backside, and fit an 8 valve AAV running between intake pipeand 5th injector.

The jury is out if a 16v is a better track car than a 2 litre 8 valve though :mafia:

i went from carb to injection, few odds and sods to do with wiring but generally plug and play!

dont do what i did and buy a cheap zorst manifold! get a supersprint one and save a world of pain!

i've used a seat toleado TD rad as it was quite a bit longer but also wasn't as thick plus it has twin fans on it. not got it running yet tho so can't say if this will be any good.

you will need a another exhaust manifold as well, most people tend to use a 4 branch designed for 16V mk1 golfs. you will need to swap your engine mounts on to the 16v engine as well.

I am running an 8v injection radiator from a mk1 golf gti...

new solid front and rear engine mount to stop the dreaded cracked manifold downpipe problems people have experienced.
I got a new VW caddy diesel rear mount and a solid front from G-Werks.

Replace fuel lines as the chances are yours will be corroding on the bend where the lines run into the engine bay.
what are you doing with brakes? Drums at the back are ok, no real advantage running discs on rear other than looks.
Oil cooler?

I replaced all the fuel lines a few weeks ago so they're all fine and dandy. Brakes are staying standard for now, until I can make the adaptors for the bigger calipers.

Hadn't thought about and oil cooler yet..

Depends what oil filter housing you are running I think, I am running an early gti one where the fittings for the pipes are on top of the housing, am I right in saying all 16v kr motors had an oil cooler set up?

if you can get the standard one then good, if not then you can get mocal set ups for £120 or so I think.

Dont do what I done and buy a oil cooler then the fittings all seperate as it cost me as much as a mocal jobby in the end!

Speaking from my own experience on my 2l 16v, I'm using a standard 8v injection radiator and standard water/oil cooler. I've been running that for the last 18 months to 2 years with no issues or overheating. The highest oil temps i've seen is 110 degrees when pushing on.

Seconded, never seen the water up above 80/85 or the oil up above 100 during normal use! Readings taken from VDO gauges so shouldnt be too far off :)
