Who's driven a mk2 with power steering?
I have this crazy idea of trying to get a Rocco from the continent loaded wih all the gear it was possible to get with them, if i can find one. what i would like to know is:
does having power steering make the steering any less vague? ie is there is a different rack & pinion and different steering lock/ratio etc (i have no idea what i'm talking about here). The unassisted steering on UK Roccos was always a bit sloppy to my tastes.
ideally i'd like to know about cars that have them fitted from standard. I know Rohan has power steering on his GT2 but since his is a modifed rack it wouldn't be the same as what i'm trying to find out about.
Cheers

duggers has a lhd valver as does heather over on 'scirocco world' of course.
pretty sure PAS came as standard on the 16v's that got VAG imported, less sure on the wider Euro specs ................will check.

There's a silver scala on uk ebay at the moment that supposedly has pas... I sent a message to the seller and he was confident it does. I asked for an engine bay pic but nothing has arrived yet.

I've driven a lot of different cars and found the Scirocco's steering to be anything but vague. Power steering usually makes steering response worse, since you lose the direct feedback from the wheels. Most modern cars with PAS are over-light (for me), a problem that gets worse at speed.Reverend Frog wrote:The unassisted steering on UK Roccos was always a bit sloppy to my tastes.
Decent tyres are probably the easiest way to make a big difference to the feel of the steering, and changing the ET of the wheels also makes a noticeable difference. Goodyear Eagle F1s on G60 steels were probably the best combination I've had for feel on a Scirocco, with the side-effects of increased heaviness at slow speeds and minor tramlining.
The quality and condition of your suspension components and steering rack, as well as the general suspension geometry, will make a big difference to the steering.

what he said if you check your camber and tracking you'll prob find it's out?
it makes a big difference!

have a road test of the 16v in a 1986 issue of MOTOR magazine and PAS was not standard equipment on the officially supplied cars.
