Tappets

Post by Risocco »

Hi all, wheres the best/cheapest place to get these from? Just got my shiney head back and would make sense to add new tappets while I'm at it.

Also, when fitting, they just pop in with a smear of oil right? No special way to do it?

Thanks in advance

Alex

Give LEEP a shout Alex ( although he may be on hols at the mo) his set cost about £32 quid but i cant remember where he got them from. When you fit them, just give them a squirt of clean oil, you will see a groove cut around the outside of the tappet to let the oil flow. Look around the groove and you will see a small oil hole, line this up with the oilway in the head, you dont have too, but i think it gets max oil flow into the tappet. Once the tappets are fitted and the cam is bolted back down, you need to wait at least half an hour before starting the engine.
Hope this helps dude. :beers:

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

question; is it posible to fix the old ones by squeezing out the old oil and letting new oil into them by submerging them in the fresh oil. or is it best just to chuck them out?

Hi,
I wanted to do this and I seem to recall there was an FAQ or something on the old forum? (or maybe sciroccouk), but after hunting I stumbled on this.

http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76499

I BELIEVE this works for rocco's too but have never done it myself (one day.... :yup: ), someone more knowledgeable may be able to help with a definate yes or no.

the tappets turned out to be different to the ones on golfs mine all didnt have the intenal spring, but tekin them apart was possible and mine were full of gunk, i cleaned them out and refilled them with clean oil and so far seems to be working.(no more tapping!!)

havve been running the rocko for a month now and still no tapping, so anyone umming and arring, go for it!wot i found was when u take the plunger out of the bucket tappet you cant actualy tek the plunger apart but there is a ball bearing valve in the top which if you poke in with a screwdriver allows u to squeeze the old gunky oil out. fill the bucket tappet with clean oil and reassemble the plunger back into the tappet bucket and back into your engine. when you start the car up the action of the cam pressing down on the tappet forces the now fresh oil straight into the plunger. i wish i had taken some photos to show you but hopefully u get the idea.
