MOT failure, simple things the garage says....

Post by Tweak »

1988 Scala failed on what the mechanic described as "simple things" he then went to explain what they were, but confused me even more....

If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be amazing!

-Nearside inner clip missing on front CV joint gaitor.

-Offside rear brake hose twisted.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.....

The CV gaiter the is rubber protector cover found each end of the drive shaft, that'll be a 30 second fix. Nearside is passenger side.

Offside (drivers side) rear brake hose, get the car on a jack, rear wheel off and have a look, if the hose is twisted...un twist it. Shouldn't be a difficult.

Where abouts are you located? There might be a member close by who can lend a hand :good:

Nearside inner clip missing on front CV joint gaitor.

Offside rear brake hose twisted.

Hi Tweak

The CV clip is very easy to sort. You could either replace it with a proper metal clip (available from any motor factor) or even a good quality cable tie. It's located on the passenger side drive shaft at the road wheel end. You'll see the rubber boot on the end of the driveshaft and it's the inside clip that is missing. You'll see a nice flat area to fit your new one.

Rear brake hose is a bit more difficult to sort and might even end up with a new brake hose. However, in front of the drivers side rear wheel you will see the suspension beam (Easier to see with the wheel off). Between the vehicle body and the beam will be a black rubber hose. This is your OSR brake flexi pipe and is obviously twisted. All you need to do is twist it in the opposite direction to sort. However, I can't work out why it is twisted but you really need to be careful here. This hose could easily rupture which would result in a near total loss of brakes (and rocco's don't have much to start with!).

If in doubt on the brake hose - please seek help from someone mechanically capable, you don't to suddenly find your brakes missing!

Right, located the place for the cable tie/clip. Should be easy!

Regarding brake hose, i think I have found it. Its rubber more flexible that the rest of brake system, has "lines" in it and has circular rubber donut type thing on it. Picture is that.....

It looks pretty new, so previous owner probs fitted it wrong.

I am in Cornwall, if anyone is down here?

That's it :hi:

If it looks new, poss just twisted as they tightened it up. However, to untwist it, you will need to slacken off the brakepipe itself whilst securing the flexi with an open end spanner so it doesn't spin. This will mean a small amount of brake fluid will escape whilst undone but not neccesarily mean the brake will need bleeding. Once 'untwisted', tighten the brake pipe back up again holding the flexi with a spanner so it doesn't twist again.

If in doubt - please seek help - it is the brakes after all.

If you're unsure of what you're doing, these are very simple jobs that shouldn't take long and won't involve expensive replacement parts. I'd be surprised if your garage would charge more than about £50 to sort the lot.
