Hi,
Been wondering recently which gearbox was originally fitted to my mk2 1990 DX - was changed a few years ago for an ACD fuel saving box with numbers 08028, with the number 4 below it. Don't seem to be getting full top speed as my dad said his old 1988 scala in 1997 could reach 125. This one doesn't seem to be getting to that and it is straining when getting to around 105. Obviously with age some hp will be lost but on a 58k car this can't be too much can it? This is why I thought it could be the changed gearbox. So what I am trying to say is that I need to put the original gearbox back in, to see whether it makes a difference, and what code it may be to see which one was put in from factory.
Cheers,
Sam.

Re: Scala 1.8i 1990 Original Gearbox From Factory?
My old 91 Scala had an AUG box fitted from factory, which has identical ratios to the ACD apart from a longer 2nd gear - so there would have been no fuel saving in fitting an ACD?
Lots of factors will affect the top speed - your Dad might have been going downhill with a tailwind. His speedo could have been less accurate and yours more accurate. Mileage is no guarantee of engine condition or power output - and don't forget his car was only 9 years old at the time and yours is approaching 3 times that.

The funny thing is that the previous owner listed it as having the gearbox increase mpg at the expense of acceleration, so I guess he wasn't correct because the acceleration is spot on. It's definitely had a change at some point, and going from what you're saying it may have had an AUG box when new, but it's all speculation.
I agree with that, a 27 year old car is gonna be much less fresh than a 9 year old one. Guess my dad will have to accept that it'll never be the same, unless I soup it up a little bit haha.

If you still have the sticker in the boot which gives all the option codes, that will tell you which gearbox was fitted when new.

My 1988 Mk1 Golf Gti cabriolet came with a ACD gearbox as standard so I recon your Scirocco would have as well.
The "bigger" 5th gearboxes are usually a 4T code gearbox.

Your dad would of been doing well to get 125 out of a Scirocco but then again the speedos do over read alot on these cars, (Top speed by the book 117mph) even with a bigger 5th gear you would struggle to get it to the red line in 5th to get a higher top speed and of course a very long air field/ race track straight.

Looked in the boot at the sticker, says Transmission: AUG. That's a good website, will have a good read of that. Of course, even I thought when he said it, that's pushing it a little aha.

you have got to remember that rose tinted glasses probably add 20mph to the top end and a full second off the 0-60 time!
