Looks good. The bad news is that most of the rot is normally under the Boykin! The gearstick rubber thing has a white plastic disc that keeps the crap out. Check out classic-vw.co.UK and vwheritage.co.UK. it's the sort of parts that cost pennies and are not worth sourcing second-hand. Nearly all parts underneath are the same as a mk1 golf so spares are plentiful. Check this link for the rear arches... viewtopic.php?f=17&t=18613
Have a read of my build thread too as I had a fair bit of rust. Link in my Sig.

I was actually just reading through your thread before I made this little update, some good graft going on there and a lot of tips for me to take on board! And as for the arches I am actually in contact with the fella that has them on Facebook and hopefully I will sort out a set!

Cheers for the help again Steve il try get one of the disc things now. Thats also very handy to know that the majority of parts are transferable from a golf, I couldn't believe it when I couldn't find any replacement panels for mk2 scirocco!!

Most of the underneath stuff and running gear, so engine, beam, wishbones, suspension, hubs, brakes, exhaust etc etc. Just ask. Also meant to say they are the jacking points you highlighted. I Jack off the rear beam them put axle stands under the square bits. On the front I Jack off the blobs and put axle stand under the rear wishbone mount. When I first bought mine about 16 years ago I could go to any scrapyard and there would be at least 3 roccos there. I could get panels etc from gsf! Times have changed!

It was a very cold and icy/rainy morning today but I was pretty keen to start getting the body kit of the scirocco. As the drivers side rear arch was already off I decided to go from the back and work my way around.

Starting with the body kit that covers the rear valance, it was already hanging off so just a couple of screws to see to which were unfortunately rounded at the heads so I got some vice grips clamped round them to get them turning. the rear valance is actually pretty bad, a small hole near the top and pretty crusty around the edges at the bottom.

Is it possible to make use of a mk1 golf rear valance? or even a mk2??

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/1918133 ... olf-84-92/

this is what it was like after I got the kit off:

Next I done the passengers rear arch, just by feeling it I could tell it was shot, rust crumbling away as I ran my fingers down it!

Heres what I found when I removed the kit.. the kit actually came off pretty easily after I got the heat gun out, I bit of fettling and it sort of peeled away from the car.

and in comparison to the other rear arch:

Image

they will both need fully replaced. I will hopefully be ordering a pair pretty soon. I have read about people making a mk2 golf arch fit for the inner rear arch, is this true? and can anyone vouch for it? as mk2 golf panels are pretty readily available

To get the sills off I put the car back up on the ramps, again it started up first time on the button, its definitely a good runner.

The interior is probably the part of the car thats been best looked after so I took the time to ensure my boiler suit wasn't going to ruin that.

Image

The sill covers were a lot easier to remove as there was no adhesive to rip apart, most of the screws underneath were shot anyway so after removing the 3 behind the circle covers and the 4 under the plastic sill clip they just sort of fell of themselves. I was pleasantly surprised at what came next...

The sills are pretty solid! just the patches underneath that are going and will need seeing to, I think someone has also tried to jack this car up on the drivers sill as it was sporting a warped kind of shape near the front, but it was still solid enough. Its quite hard to photograph sills so hopefully its pretty easy to see the condition. I was honestly expecting to see a lot of crust when I took off the bodykit on the sills so this was pretty good to see.

This is where I think someones been at it with the trolley jack

Image

Image

Image

this is the passenger side, just as good as the drivers

Image

a bit crusty on the underside

All the bodykit that has been removed so far, treated a pressure wash to get all of the debris off of them, these will be stored in the boot until such times when they are needed again. And I think I will be putting the kit back on as I'm not a massive fan of the non body kit look..

Image

Image

Image

I never had the chance to get the fronts off today and the rain was getting very icy so I decided to call it a day at that.

Looking at the front ones anyway I see the bodykit is attached to the inner arch covers, all the screws are rounded at the heads and I can't get any vice grips in to get them turning. Any ideas as I don't want to rip them off and risk damaging the bodykit. And as for the front valance bodykit bit its pretty much hanging off as it is but there are a few screws that are not coming out as when I turn the screws the white clips behind them just turn aswell. And does the iron bar from the front bumper need to be removed to get the bodykit off at the front?

Im quite worried my slam panel is gonna be on its way out too and I presume these are hard to come by and only available off of a breaker.

I feel like I keep repeating the same question here, but can the front valance, inner arch lips etc be used from mk1 golf?

http://www.classic-vw.co.uk/3-door-374-c.asp

I'll see what everything is like once the body kit is off but at the moment I have a lot of panels to start sourcing and ordering up!

Thanks in advance to everyone that helps with answers to all my questions!

This might help with your searches http://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/scirocco/sci/1985-13.

That rear valence doesn't look that bad, more bent out of shape than anything else (unless there's worse rust not showing in the pics). The bit around the exhaust can have a plate made up and welded in (that's what mine had). A good welder should be able to tidy the rest of it up as well, especially if you are planning to put the bodykit back on. If not, you can get them new...for a price, same with the slam panel. Maybe check with Ben.

At the front arches, if you don't have a set of easy-outs, just drill the screws out, they only go into plastic clips which are readily available. A pair of mole grips on the clips for the valance screws will do the trick.

How did you get the bumper skin off? Were all the clips broken? It usually comes off attached to the ironwork!

That link is what Iv been needing lately cheers!

the rear valance may repair it's just pretty crusty in the bottom corners and round the exhaust and it just looks pretty weak too so I thought I'd just ask about the golf ones as they are only 27 odd quid

Il maybe have a go at getting the rest of the kit off tomorrow if the weather is decent, when I picked up the car the bumper skin was in the boot and the iron bar was still on the car so I'd imagine it's had a bump when it was being used in the fields. So il probably be needing a new bumper in that case, in all the pictures where the front bumper is on it's actually only placed on and not fixed on.

Once I get everything off of the front end and I can see what's what il maybe speak to Ben if I need anything, cheers!

I see your from Aberdeenshire, can't be too far away from me in that case, good to see some local people on here

Thanks again

I have a few bumpers, no slam panel though.

You may need to come and visit my stash(es) at some point.

Ben.

That's no worse than mine was. Just make up some plates and tidy it up. After a coat of stone chip you will never know! I think that no mk1 golf panels are compatible as far as I know. I made panels to fix my inner wings bit not sure about mk2 arches to be fair. I would buy a reverse drill bit to get the screws out, they start drilling then grab the screw and out they come. Keep the pics coming, looking forward to the progress.

Honestly, the rust isn't that bad! Just keep chipping away...

1985 scirocco GTX barn find restoration

Post by mk2daz »

My aim for this morning was to just get the rest of the body kit off of the scirocco so I could see how rotten everything is, things were immediately delayed when the bonnet release cable snapped leaving the bonnet stuck shut. I took the headlights out and the grill off and popped the bonnet up manually from there, all the screws for the headlights brackets were rounded so that took longer than it should have, the brackets themselves are actually pretty bent and rusty so could do with a bit of attention and a paint (once I source indicators!) thankfully I got the grill off in one piece.

Image

When I first went to start her up the battery was dead, the car has only been sitting for a couple of days since last start up and although the battery is probably quite old I do think there is something draining the battery down but at the moment that's the least of my worries!

Next I took of the iron bar from the front bumper as for some reason it the bumper skin had detached itself from this probably during the field thrashing this car has had

So with the lights and bumper and grill off the car was looking like it had no face

Image

Image

I then took off the front valance section of the bodykit to see how badly the front valance was damaged, its bent back quite a bit but I think it should be an easy enough job to reshape it as it is quite thin metal down there, what do you guys think?

The whole front end in general ain't in the best nick but it's solid enough I think, the slam panel is a bit rusty at the teeth though..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then it was a helping hand from the golf to get her running again so I could move it to a better spot to get jacked up either side at the front to remove the bodykit over the front wings.

Image

The body kit peeled off pretty easily either side the thing that took the longest was getting the arch liners out!! Every screw was rounded off and where I couldn't get vice grips on them I had to pull and tug till they popped off, probably damaged/lost most of the clips as a result..

Anyway I got them off and here is the drivers side front wing in the flesh, the arch is a different colour altogether which suggest to me this wing has been replaced before in the past.

Image

Although it may look solid enough in that picture it is actually pretty rotten, the arches seem to have rusted out where the bolts are on the arch and the bottom sill area is pretty much shot aswell, I will take the front wings off before I decide what to do with them I think, they might repair but then I might also need to drop Ben a message about his front wings :D

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now on to the passengers side, I was hoping for a slightly better result as it tends to be the drivers side is always slightly worse from spray on the roads from opposing vehicles, and it was a bit better but a similar story with rust around the screw areas

Image

Image

A lot more solid in the sill area this time, I think this wing is definitely saveable!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

That was all I had time for today as I have a lot of studying to be getting on with for university exams, and obviously that takes first priority

But every little helps in the progress

Image

This old rusty scirocco is making my golf feel like a brand new car!!

Oh and I forgot to mention/ask..

My drivers front wing has the side indicators blanked off with a grommet where as the passenger side doesn't have anything

what would a UK spec 1985 GTX of had as standard?

Im not bothered if it has them or not im just curious as to which is correct.

cheers
