Re: engine mods---gt2
How about sticking a dx head on the block?
I swapped the std carb head (GU) on my jetta for an injection one (pb) as not only does it have the better cam but the exhaust valves are a couple of mm bigger.
Not sure if theres differences between the valves on dx/ex engines ... can anyone confirm valve sizes on these heads?
K&N doesn't make any difference imo and if you use a pancake on the Weber then its pulling in warm air instead of cold.
A bit of diy porting and "shaving the hedgehog" is a free way of improving airflow from the carb, which might help a bit.

its the camshaft.Junglist wrote:So just to clarify, a cam is what? How much would one cost roughly and how long to fit one? Sorry if I should know this but I don't.
you can get uprated ones from piper, schrick, kent amongst others. as mentioned a standard gti camshaft will fit a carburettor car without a problem.

And is this a part I'll find on my spare '89 scala i engine? And are there any others I can transfer for easy power increase?
Tornado GTII: Koni, Flo-flex, Girling, Weber, K&N, Powerflow, Goodridge, ASA, Yokohama... to fit: stainless 4 branch.

DX has 2mm larger exhaust valaves than the EX.skattrd wrote:Not sure if theres differences between the valves on dx/ex engines ... can anyone confirm valve sizes on these heads?

Avoid the pancake filter at all costs as Chris says, it will just pull in hot air and looks like you used to own a Corsa.
Swapping your complete spare i head will see a little increase in power. Remember to plug the injector holes and only run it with a weber carb. If you run with the 2E2 still on the head will fill with water as it needs the water feed for the auto choke warm up. Plug the water feed to the inlet manifold if doing this conversion.Junglist wrote:And is this a part I'll find on my spare '89 scala i engine? Any other? as in engines? Depends on your budget and capacity to hold the turtle in.

Just to clarify, the pancake will pull in hot air not cold as Ant has said, although that was what he probebly meant.......... ;)

nothing else of note that will add extra guts to a carb engine. But water pumps, hoses, oil/water cooler etc are the same and can be used for spares.Junglist wrote:Any other? as in parts off the scala i

5 (ish) BHP dude. Best to describe it as the car pulls as well with a passanger with the injection cam, then it did on the original cam when you were driving alone, if you follow...Rocco Ben wrote:how much power increase we talking for upgrading to a GTI camshaft?

Re: engine mods---gt2
The camshaft looks like a lumpy stick, and it controls how high the valves lift, and how long they're open for, so it's a big factor in how much power the engine makes. The trade off is generally between power and economy. Also, low end driveability can be affected.

Adding on from this I got myself a copy of Lindsay porter colour manuals and it's bloody good. Like a How To Play With Cars For Dummies.MikeH wrote:

Re: engine mods---gt2
well last weekend i slapped a golf gti bottom end on it (had been bored out, new pistons etc) got my weber on way, lookin out for a k-jet cam and just spent 200quid on serviceing parts so should make a nice difference...only thing i dont like about engine mods is that from the outside you cant see that i've done anything apart from lower it
