Fingers crossed, this was causing the water leak that I had into the boot. Last bit of major rust, that I've found, now gone!

Forgot to clean the rear wiper housing before I put it back in, so stripped that out again yesterday. Got that and the spoiler cleaned up and everything re-fitted.

Tried the head unit in, I like it, doesn't stand out like a sore thumb too much. Doesn't quite slide all the way home so may need a bit of trimmimg behind the mount.

Guessing these are speaker wires...but there are only four and the car has four speakers....
but no idea why the plug takes them down to three?

i hate vw stereo wiring. from memory from about 8 years ago so most likely wrong, but may help a little. On mine the speakers (the 3 wires) went to a fader unit which was next to the gearstick where it then distributed to the speakers. it only faded left and right but i think it made what was a 2 speaker headunit into a 4. yours may be similar. but does look different. i think they may just be sharing a negative perhaps.
The bulb i believe is the illumination for your heater levers. pull the slider levers out and the speed knob and the unit then pops off. should be obvious then, just pushes into the sleeve. Does it light up normally?
the extra cable that has been cut is grey/blue on the other side of the block. that is illumination from back in the day when stereo where illuminated seperately. that will be live every time you turn on the lights, so probably want to tape it up! red is permenant (may be switched but don't think it is) live, brown is negative. the black plug is for the old stereo.
that bracket with the hole in was the old security bracket and you could bolt the stereo in. this may be what is getting in the way. or some cables may be getting stuck between the headunit and the bracket which will stop it pushing home.

Yup, fader down by the gearstick. I suppose safest bet is to run all new wires from headunit to speakers.
I've used her so little lately (especially in the dark) that I can't rmember! I'll make it the next job to pop the front of the unit off and have a look.
I've got to run a new power and earth to the amp so I may as well run the same for the headunit and then find a switched live.
I'll check that whil I'm messing with the bulb holder.

Pretty sure that bulb is from the ashtray rather than the heater controls. Most cars don't have a removable bulb for the heater controls.

Just been out to have a quick look, it is indeed the bulb from the ashtray (but I had a prod around and there is exactly the same style bulb and holder, that pulls out, behind the heater controls)bengould wrote:Pretty sure that bulb is from the ashtray rather than the heater controls. so i was right ish! pleased you fixed a bit.
personally i would leave the fader and bell wire where it is and just run new decent cable. its not a big job, just drop the undertrays, doorcards off and run through. that fader confused me!

Yeah, I need to run amp leads to the boot anyway so I'll just renew the whole lot, saves buggering about.

The stereo illumination wiring is odd. Mine was utterly melted so doing the same and putting new stereo wires in.
What's the quality of the Blauplunkt like? Always been an alpine whore but want something a little more subtle but still dbs.

Physically it seems good quality, well built unit and the removable front is nice and weighty, as soon as I get her wired up I'll let you know about the sound and useability.
I'm normally Kenwood, been using them for 20 odd years and they've always been good. Had a dabble with Sony but they started to get a bit garish and the last one I had only lasted just over a year.
