Steering wheel compatibility.

Post by Grumpyguts »

Hi folks, my question to the panel is can I fit a MK1 Scirocco steering wheel to a MK2 column or are the spline sizes different ? Also does anyone have a MK1 steering wheel in presentable condition that they would sell ? Look forward to hearing from you.

The spline size changed around 1988 when an adapter was fitted onto the top of the steering column. This adapter can be removed and a smaller spline wheel fitted (but you may get issues - the horn contact ring not aligning for example)

i fitted a mk1 wheel on mine and it looked awsome but there is a spacer you will need that sits behind the steeing wheel that spacers the wheel away from the coloum.
i didnt have this spacer so every time you lent on the wheel the horn would sound because the lower part of the horn contact ring would touch the brass screw that holds the stalks in place.
plus getting the large spline adapter off is a mission in itself because you need a puller to get it off.

James, I had the same problem when changing the steering wheel. Do you have a picture/diagram etc of the spacer fitted ?

i will try and get a picture up for you next week as the crusty rusty rocket has a small spline late mk2 steering wheel with the spacer, which ive never seen before and how i found out what i was missing when i fitted the mk1 wheel to my mk2.
i will try and get some measurements for it too as it just looks like a bit of tube.

I changed from the std wheel to the 4 button. Had to remove the Spline adaptor as well, on fitting the new wheel, every time I lean on the wheel the horn sounds !!

unfortunately i didn't have a socket big enough to hand at the time to get the spacer out so i will try again next week to get it off so i can measure properly.
