Replacing sunroof seal

Post by danbeier »

Decided it was time to replace as went through a car wash on Monday and got rather wet! (Hadn't leaked a drop with all the heavy rain though...)

Have the replacement seal - had a quick go last night but looks like I will have to remove whole sunroof panel. Has anyone managed to change it without removing? (factory fit metal slide type on Storm mk2)

While I'm at it...when in car wash water also dripped in through a little rip in the headlining near the sunroof...could this be blocked drain hoses? Easy to sort? Bear in mind I am not good / experienced at these sort of things...previous car DIY attempts have often ended up with a hammer being involved which works well on an old Uno but I'd rather not on the rocco!

Thanks,
Dan

i'm assuming this is a factory fit tilt/slide sunroof? if so, the seal isn't to keep the water out. it is just there to cut the wind noise. slide the sunroof open and you should be able to see a small hole in the 2 front corners of the opening where the water is meant to drain. carefully pour a little water in to see which of them is blocked. try to clear the blockage by carefully rodding it with some stiff wire - MIG wire is good for this. if you can't clear it, remove the appropriate front wheelarch liner and see if you can rod the pipe from the other end

Thanks will try that - guess I'd better look at rear drain pipes as well...I'd thought that the seal had something to do with water as it let some in when under pressure (carwash) but has never leaked otherwise. Oh well, at least it looks a lot neater now too!

Take a look at DrDubs Storm resto thread Dan. You will see where the metal drains rot away, i had the same issue with my Storm. Relatively easy to rectify.

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

Re: Sunroof Rear Drain Pipes.....

Post by jxp »

Well we have eventually traced the cause of the mobile swimming pool I have in the boot of the mk2......With my mate in the boot and hosepipe full belt we discovered the water pissing in in two places. The main one seems to be where the speaker shelf meets the side body. Looks to me like a perished rear drain pipe that runs from back of sunroof down to the rear lights. The headlining is soaken and its finding the only way out, which is down past the rear washer bottle and into the boot. See pics....

Obviouslyt the headlining will have to be removed if I am going to loog at this but is it worth it?? Bearing in mind the car is garaged and is not my daily??

Any advise guys......

I saw a solution on a website regarding drain pipes from the sunroof and an easy fix.
Buy some length of 5 mm clear pipe (the dealers are cheaper than B&Q!), the same stuff that you use for the washers. Open the sunroof all the way back so that you can see the drain holes. Push the 5mm pipe down the drain holes until it comes out the bottom, this will clear any blockages. If the existing drain pipes are past it you can leave the new pipe in and glue a washer to the new pipe and old pipe, thereby making a new pipe but slightly smaller.
I hope this makes sense, I wish I had the drawing facility and I could demonstrate.

Thats a cracking option ian but we've sorted it. Curtain wire down the pipe from the top along with hot water and detergent and eventually unblocked it.....was full of red mud just like teh rest of the hidden parts of the car. BTW not had chance to call Tracey but will tomorrow.
