fuel pump location

Post by james butler »

im thinking of mounting my electric fuel pump behind the drivers seat,
1 to keep it dry and clean.
2 to make servicing/ access much easier,(filters and such before the pump).
3 this is a track car so looks arent important.

but the car will be used on the road to drive to events so is there a legal reason not to do this?
i plan to run a fuel hose from the tank into the car behind the drivers seat then back through the floor to its usual route.

Erm, yes. I would keep fuel well away from yourself. On track you're even more likely to have an accident where fuel can go everywhere than you are on the road. I speak as a man who has worked as part of the rescue crew at motorsport events.

Track days will not necessarily be bound by MSA rules, but I would prepare any track car to MSA blue book safety standards:

hmm sounds fair enough.
its just ive seen so many cars with ally tanks with everything in the boot space/spare wheel well seemed like a good idea at the time.

i think i will stick to having it under the car.

cheers ed that's quite a useful link
this is what it had to say on fuel lines/pump

Fuel Systems
5.13.1. Have any fuel lines passing through the
driver/passenger compartment protected and, if
non-metallic, to be internally or externally metal braided
hydraulic pressure hose or fuel lines complying with
FIA specifications.
5.13.2. They may only be joined by screwed sealing
joints or vehicle manufacturers approved joint.
5.13.3. If fitted with fuel fillers in a closed boot, or under
closure, have collector/spill trays incorporated to drain
outside the vehicle.
