Fuel pump amp rating

Post by MattRocco »

Hey guys I need to know the ampage of the fuel pump so I can fit a correct rated cut off switch (not for racing or anything just so when I park up at night I can turn it off and if anyone tried to steal it it wouldn't start... I live in a area car theft is very common so this is a must)

I had fotted one a few months ago, I didn't even think about ratings etc and put a 30 amp switch in.

Today I drove to work and the car completely cut out, traced and found the switch had melted

I'm guessing now maybe a 40? And also put a in line fuse in for the switch this time?

Any help much appreciated, it's a 87 gtx 1.8 8v injection

Regards
Matt

simple trick would be to just remove the fuel pump fuse ( no' 5 ) !! or saying that , why not just remove the dissy ??? its what i do. tbh if they want your car they will take it anyways...
but - its been a fair while since hearing about any scirocco mk1 or mk2s getting stolen as it seems the theiving market is for newer cars. if you dont like the idea of removing the dissy every time you park your car up or even removing the pump fuse, then why not just get a decent alarm and immobiler fitted..
i had a sterling immobiliser fitted to mine and kept laughing at mechanics trying to start my car to drive it into the workshop for mot's lol

Not thought about removing the fuse that's a good idea. I checked the fuse and it's 15A rating and he switch was a 25A so not sure what would have caused it to melt?! Unless wire I used to the switch is too thick

A disklok may be a good idea as its a visual deterrent to any scum bags.
Small size fits nicely.
You can buy them new or if second hand they did come with 2 keys new so make sure you get 2.
