UK Mk1 info for our French Scirocco friends.

Post by Dr. Dub »

Please get your thinking caps on chaps, I'm not that clued up on Mk1 Sciroccos. I had an email from a fellow French Scirocco fan asking about details on UK spec Mk1s. Here are the questions that I answered as best I could. Please add any info or correct what I've put.

How many Mk1 Sciroccos have been imported in UK between 1974 and 1981, yearly if possible ?

1974=193, 1975=1662, 1976=3149, 1977=4212, 1978=4849, 1979=6491, 1980=4892 and 1981=2254. Total UK sales of Mk1s were around 25,000.

Which types and motors have they?

Scirocco TS 74-77 (originally FD 1471cc carb then FR 1588cc carb from autumn 1975>), Scirocco GTI (EG 1588cc injection), Scirocco GLI (EG 1588 injection), Scirocco GLS, unique to the UK 77-81(FR 1588cc carb) and Scirocco Storm, unique to the UK 79-81(EG 1588cc injection).
The 1100cc and 1300cc engines and L, LS, GL, S, SL, CL and GT models were not available in the UK.

Did they have special details for UK ?
The UK didn’t have any low specification models. UK cars have the awful linkage bar from the brake pedal on the right to the servo on the left.

Did they have electronic injection ?
All I know is my friends 1976 1.6 carb GLS model DID NOT have electronic ignition. However, I have a magazine test report from 1980 that states the GLI has electronic ignition.

Again, any help is appreciated. My Mk1 knowledge is limited.

I think 1979 is when VW fitted electronic ignition to all of sciroccos
My 1978 GLS did have points but I seem to have an early 1978 model as I've got tomb style seats with the seatbelt bracket fitted to the floor, metal/chrome trim along the roof gutter, sill and windows, looking at another 1978 car at the nationals they have the later seats with the separate head rest and seatbelt bracket fitted to the seats not sure if they have electronic ignition?

Yes, I understand 1978 cars can have all kinds of combinations of bits.

I remember my '79 GLS originally had points, but I changed it to an (aftermarket) Mobelec contactless system.
