Rubber Boot on lower steering CV joint
Hey everyone,
I need to change the rubber boot on the lower steering CV joint. However the part here:
https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/scirocc ... iants-rhd/
looks smaller than the part currently on.
Looked at the diagram on vagcat and the part looks bigger than what VW heritage is showing
http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/COR/1988/13/52/183204/
Number 5 on there
Cheers

Re: Rubber Boot on lower steering CV joint
to get the boot off i undid the steering rack mounts and slid it forward, then undid the bolt securing the lower column to the rack (make sure you mark up the position before disconnecting).
because you are changing the old one for a new one i would just cut the old one off first so you can see what you are doing as its a bit of a bugger to get to.
once the lower column is disconnected from the rack you can install the new boot.
then refit opposite to removal.
i dont remember a spring though scrappy1382? you have got me worried now as i must have either left mine off or it got lost!

Re: Rubber Boot on lower steering CV joint
So just to clarify (as I have said in previous messages, I am new to this sort of stuff and fortunately I haven't been faced with many challenges etc but need to learn more about the mechanical side).... I need to cut the old one off then undo the bolt that connects the lower steering column to the rack (marking up the position before I disconnect it) Why is this?. Once undone I can slide the new boot up the column before re bolting up the lower steering column to the rack again.
http://www.partsbase.org/vw/scirocco-sc ... track-rod/
is it no.19 that I need to unbolt?
Thanks for the help guys

Re: Rubber Boot on lower steering CV joint
yes mate you got it.
the reason you disconnect the knuckle joint to the rack is so you can slide the boot into place then reconnect it back up afterwards.
to be fair its a fairly straightforward job just a bit fiddly.

Re: Rubber Boot on lower steering CV joint
I found this a royal pain ( lots of upside down inside out and muttered profanities ) then I realised that it is quite easy to loosen the steering rack itself and the whole job becomes far more pleasant, it's the millimetres that count :)
