Thought I'd start a thread here for my new toy.

I found this board while searching for some help with our mk3 R, had a quick look at the for sale section, and ended up with this :-D :

It's a bit of an odd mix as the seller had acquired the car as a donor for one of his numerous projects.It originally had a blue interior, blue dash and carpets, as well as electric windows and a big aftermarket spoiler, but all of these were removed, and swapped for a mixture of different bits from different years. It also has some choice period mods including front upper and lower strut braces, K&N panel filter with the bottom of the airbox cut off, 4 branch manifold into larger bore exhaust, lower and stiffer aftermarket suspension, and a set of unusual wheels that are apparently from Karmann. Hence the name FrankenRoc ;)

After a bit of a clean yesterday to get the mustiness out of the seats, and see how bad the paint is, I think this will be a 2 stage project. First will to be get it solid, mechanically sound, usable, and do enough rust sorting to keep it from getting any worse in the near future.
Next summer, when funds allow, maybe the engine and glass out for a bit of paint. Maybe the DX might not go back in, and an AUQ or BAM might find it's way in... ;)

Basic service done: new oil & filter, plugs, dizzy and rotor arm. Runs a bit smoother now.

Discovered the rad fan is dodgy. Loose connection in the motor housing, so it only works with tape holding the plug at an angle. New one at the end of the month.

Warm up reg is held on with the wrong bolts, that are too long, so not sitting tight against the block. Need to find a couple of bolts asap.
Runs rough as hell from cold, so this might also be buggered.

Coolant flush and replace with OAT tomorrow, as well as a brake inspection and fluid replacement.

Good start on bring this car back to life... One thing that does often get over looked is gearbox oil it does not last forever and simple to drain and replace with the right tool or 17mm Allen key you will also need somewhere flat to get the level right on refilling.

G/box oil is on the list ;)

Ordered replacement rad fan today.

We'll be at Cosford, either in this, the mk3 R or, maybe, both if I can convince the girlfriend!

Fans fitted, coolant changed.

Looks like it only had water in, lots and lots of rust :(

Took it for a blast over to Birkenhead to see a mate, love how it drives!

So a coolant hose split on the M6 this afternoon :(
Luckily it went right next to the hose clip, so a cutback with a pair of scissors and reattaching it got me home.
It was the pipe into the side of the head, over the gearbox, to the heater matrix. Problem is now the oil warning light and buzzer are on pretty constantly, even though the oil is at max. Probably water in the loom (which is routed directly under the split) but I'll have to give it a thorough check tomorrow. Hopefully be sorted before Cosford...

As ready as I can be. Most people wouldn't drive a car in this state to the garage, nevermind a 160 mile round trip to a show! It's a rolling shed, but it might just make it! Loads of little niggles, rattles, and seeping leaks, but we'll carry on regardless.
Lost my support car now. My girlfriend has an eye infection, so will be coming as a passenger in the Frankenroc instead of bringing her mk3 R.
