You should have hydraulic tappets so no feeler gauges required as they use oil pressure to set their own clearance. The tapping is because one isn't pumping up fully, it might clear with just an oil change as you said you haven't done one for a while.

Ahhhh, And I just bought a brand new feeler gauge  Just did an oil change and it's still tapping, Getting faster when you accelerate but the tapping can be gone for days then it will come back. Any ideas?

Cheers Tim :-)

yes, once the engine has warmed up or after a shortish drive.

clears the 'click' almost instantly.

The 3 year old oil which was in there may of not helped, as you have just changed the oil see what it's like in a few days.

change the tappets mate they're not that expensive. you can change the timing belt, cam seal and the rocker gasket at the same time.

I just poured a bottle of that 'miracle juice' in, It seems quiter but I need to take it for a run. If it's still there then I will change the tappets, Just trying the cheap method first.

You can also re-build them fairly easily. For free. :-).

I tried that but found you can remove the middle bit but I could not remove the workings (spring and ball bearing) form the middle bit, I could empty the old black oil out and filled them with Gunk engine cleaner and soaked them for a week then washed and cleaned them out and refilled with fresh oil.
I've not tried them yet as I've not got around to putting the rebuild engine in my Golf

you dont need to take them fully apart. just push the ball bearing valve you can see in the bottem in and the old oil squeezes out quite easily.
then just refill with fresh oil the same way.

Yep that's what I did in the end, it's just on the video on youtube they take everything apart which is not possible on my tappets.
in my last picture you can see a metal ring which seems to hold the insides in.

i must have watched the same video and i was was scratching my head when they took it apart.
on the video it has a circlippy thing holding it together where like you said on ours its sort of press fit clip i.e non removable.
should work nicely though, when i did mine they were quiet for a good while.
ended up changing them recently after i cooked the engine oil and they started tapping again.
