Sunroof Help

Post by JABBER »

Hi Guys

Haven't been on here for a long time. Haven't been able to spend much time with my beloved GTX lately, however hoping to change this in the near future.

My first project has been to try and resurrect the slide & tilt sunroof.

To my horror the parts are definitely obsolete.

First problem over then...

So I cracked on and dismantled it. Que second problem the wind deflector had obviously been removed by some uncaring previous owner.....hate em!

Finally dismantled and out of the car. The cables seemed intact and not mangled.

The snag seems to lie in the water drain plate lever being broken along with the connecting rod spring.

My Question then?

Anyone got a clue on how I can deal with this?

I think the guide rail end sections are missing as well.

Regards Rob

Sorry to hijack but didnt want to start another thread, ive been scratching my head over this since I had the car, previous owner had got the sunroof on and working but had not put the interior trim in and couldnt figure out how either (the piece that attaches to the spring and its surround)

Can anyone confirm or deny my suspicion that he's done this back to front, I keep looking at it and thinking that it must go in before the outer trim as there doesnt seem to be a way with that in the road

Rob
Can you take a photo of the broken bits I have just rebuilt my roof most of the parts are available from Germany.
Macc the Scirocco Haynes manual gives a good write up on the roof.

Cheers Chris, got hold of a manual today (took some finding!!) Now I can see whats wrong, to take it apart it starts with outer trim, which means logically its last to go back and its already on! Looking at the breakdown pic its a bit confusing, especially as I wasnt the one who took it apart in the first place! Im very hesitant to mess as it opens and closes like it should at the minute, I just know theres a good chance it wont after ive messed with it is all! Even my mechanic who used to work on these back in the day at a VW dealership shuddered and backed away from it!

Yes, you do have to slide the interior panel into the side rails before fitting the rear water deflection plate, the front guide plate and the outer roof panel.
You will need to dismantle virtually the whole roof, if you want to refit the interior panel. Take it slowly and do not try to force it, if bits stick. Also, do not overtighten the screws holding the side rails, as some of them are into rivnuts which, if overtightened, will detach from the body panel. And they are a pain to refit properly.
