Ignition timing advance

Is anyone free to take a look at their haynes manual and let me know what the advance is for a 1.8 auto mk2 please?

I've left mine miles away!

Advance it till it pinks under load then retard the timing a little till it stops.
This is the only way I do mine..

Just make a mark on the dissy shaft near the clamp so if it all goes wrong you can put it back.

As per Haynes. Ignition timing at idle
Engine type
Jb,fr,eg. 0+-1 with vacuum hose attached
Ew,ex 18+-1 with vacuum hose attached
Ex 6+-1 with vacuum hose detached

Bloody gun died so I just shifted it about until it sounded right!

Seriously, just keep advancing it little by little until it pinks under heavy load, then back it off a touch to stop it pinking. Will run much nicer than set by the book

i gotta ask what is pinking and what does it sound like?
i thought i knew but after chatting with a mate im not so sure now.

Nasty rattly pingy noise, usually when engine is under load. causes are fuel compression igniting before the spark fires, or the spark fires too far before the piston is at the top of its travel, so it is still rising as the fuel burns

What he said but for we simple souls that ain't got a clue it sounds like pink pink pink hence the name????

Put your car into too high a gear for the speed you are doing and then put your foot down, do it going up a hill if you can, if its gonna pink then thats the time it will do it. Its a distinctive tinny rattle in line with the firing sequence, like you've got a marble in one cylinder.
