Exhaust manifold on EX engine scala

Post by drewb101 »

Got the dreaded ticking....pretty sure it's the manifold (with luck maybe gasket) but any recent advice on best replacement or if it could be welded if cracked and idea on cost?
Seem to recall my previous mk2 golf gti was weldable

They don't usally go, it's the down pipe at the joint as the 2 pipes seperate that is a common problem. Get about 1 meter of garden hose and put one end to your ear and move the other end around the manifold and down pipe and you should be able to find the fault, you might need to jack the car up and get underneath as well as going over the top.

Popluar upgrade is either the Mk1 golf GTi 6 stud exhaust manifold then you get rid of the C clips or a 4 to 1 down pipe performance manifold.

Same advice for EX and DX, with the exhaust on ebay just check the hangers are in the right place as yours eg. the ones on the backbox etc. Don't know much about those exhaust so can't comment on quality, fit etc...

You can pick up VW 2nd hand exhaust manifold for peanuts on ebay etc as they are the same on the Mk1 Golf, it's just the postage which is expensive as they are heavy.

What do you mean by ticking?

If you suspect its at the manifold then likely either one of the manifold gaskets is breached or the friction/sealing ring between the manifold and downpipe has collapsed. Or as above, a crack in the downpipe.

Thanks for all your advice chaps, went ahead and bought a 4 into 1 branch manifold from ebay (hottuning).

Pleased with the results, although everything else is stock this has improved free revving and makes her really nice to drive, especially as the manifold has blown since I got her a few months back.

Stereo now upgraded with a amplified sub fitted too. Next job is to identify the source offer smell when I put more than half a tank of gas in. No obvious leaks from my initial look, and filler neck looks ok.

Take out the rear seat base and look at the seal around the fuel sender unit, it may be goosed but are still available from the dealers.
