Kjet stalling - Fitting new ignition switch

Post by jim91 »

Past few days my 91 scala has just lost all power whislt driving, oil temp light flashes, revs drop and that's it. Starts immediatly after and goes 100%

One of the times it did when leaving work and heard ticking from relays so assumed fuel pump one sticking and replaced it (had bother with this about 5 years ago and so carry a spare now)

Today it did it on me a lot, but moreso when I came of a carraigeway onto country road. Tried to bump start and it wouldn't but started no probs when turned key, at one point i touched key and it came back to life.

This leading me to think faulty ignition switch maybe getting shaken on bumpy road and knocking power of.

Any thoughts or similar problems? If so do folks think more likly the wee plastic switch itself or the barrel?

Do you have loads of keys on the bunch as the weight of them could be pulling the key slightly?

I had the exact symptoms with a gtx. Turned out to be the connections in the multi plug to the switch. Remove the cowling and next time it happens give the wires a jiggle. If it cures it, you have the answer. Hope this helps.

If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!

Got new switch and went to fit today with aid of Haynes. Stripped it all down then Haynes as useful as ever "prise out retaining clip and spring" looks like spindle and colour then two spacers to be battered off, thought the screw for switch may have been on the outside of barrel as mate told me he changed one on another vw before by bending a screwdriver to fit it. It would appear that the screws are internal and the barrel etc needs to be removed.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllp!!! :-o

All advice gratefully accepted

"looks like spindle and colour then two spacers to be battered off"

do you mean the spline adaptor on the top of the column? try dropping the column out of the top of the UJ and pulling it out (careful of getting the bushes back where they came from when refitting)

Yeah dude the spline and meant say collar not colour! You mean if drop column out easier to get them off or what?

Might just have to reassemble and drive away at it this week then strip and attempt again next weekend!

In the meantime I'm hoping it miraculously fixes itself lol

No, I mean rather than increase you blood pressure removing the spline adaptor from the top of the steering column, remove the column from it's housing. You can then slide the ignition housing off the column housing simples.

th hard part about putting it back on the UJ is keeping the spring in the bottom in place?

the easiest way i've found is to put some small cable ties on the spring to compress it and it makes it a lot easier, when you're done just cut the ties and carefully remove.

I found removing the drivers seat made access to the UJ joint a lot easier.
