EX engine oil leak at timing belt end

Post by MacColl »

It's an 8V carbed EX engine. I am aware that the cam cover can leak and the sump gasket but don't think its either. Could I have a leak at either of the oil seal rings at the cam or bottom end? I'll also mention a ticking noise from the timing belt that I get when the car is warmed up. I never figured out what it was?

Is this known to happen? easy to change top and bottom seals? best place to buy?

You can see oil at the bottom which is evident above above the sump..

Could it be coming from this oil seal or the lower Crankshaft one?..

Intermediate shaft oil seal is a usual cuplrit re 'where the hell is that leak coming from' - worth doing when changing cambelt as per this thread on mk1 golf forum

best way to trace an oil leak is first off, clean all the oil off. get some degreaser or carb cleaner and go nuts. take it for a short run afterwards and it will be much easier to see where it is coming from

Another thing that can cause this is your rocker cover breather is blocked, especially the mesh bit built into the rocker cover.
Mine was leaking from the intermediate seal but when I come to change it the seal had actually been pushed out of the block by crankcase pressure. My rocker cover mesh was rammed with nasty gunk.
As Nate says tho change the seals and the timing belt together and while you have the rocker off clean out the mesh filter.

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!
