Luckily one of my mates managed to get it sorted for me for nothing. Cut the end of the old one ans swapped it over and heated and reshaped the bends.

Just don't forget to give it a good coat of paint, you can see what happens at the top of the filler neck where the mud gets trapped.

Poor old girl hasn't been run for a month so I wanted to get the filler neck on a.s.a.p. She's never going to be a daily driver so I just gave the neck a quick paint, didn't come out too bad but it was painted outside on a bloody windy day.

The fit isn't perfect but it'll do for now, she's running again and only cost me £38. I might be able to tweak it a bit and get it to fit.

would mean a change of key, but lots of the replacement filler caps are much flatter, so would be an easy solution. ask in your local motor factor, little indy ones are more likely to keep non-original ones than the likes of gsf or europrats

I have 2 sciroccos . One has an OK neck and Im making sure that it doesnt rot externally at least by keeping a very close and particular hosing cleaning regime.
I was going to add a similarity to cleaning your willy... but thought better of it.. too late...
....The rotted pipe one one of my sciroccos was an MOT fail. on the grounds that it `looked rotten`.... I took it off and took it to lad with a TIG welder and he has put metal on the areas where he thinks it is thin. TIG welding is the way to go if there is any metal missing. Find someone with a TIG welder. I must get one.
Then I have painted it with polyurethane B&Q varnish. NOT THE WATER BASED STUFF BUT THE SOLVENT BASED YACHT VARNISH EXTERIOR STUFF.. about 6 coats.. at the boring rate of 1 coat per day.. Just do it!!!!
Take the pipe off anyway its not difficult. One jubilee clip well soaked in WD 40 on to the tank. Or cut off the clip. Then the pipe will be held with an intermediate bracket nut. a 10mm nut up under the wheel arch. SOAK THIS FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS WITH WD40. and then, as I experienced, this will usually shear straight off and you think all is lost!!
never mind.. You can make a bracket/clip and self tap this into the wheel arch metal.. I didnt bother as if the pipe is strong it will stand the span/ distance..
This is not to be a rush job... the filler pipe is delicate metal, very OK in some places and very weak in others and your job is to beef it up with external coats of polyurethane ... in the form of proper P/u varnish.. maybe called yacht varnish.. NOT THE WATER BASED STUFF.
I heard from a scientist mate that polyurethane is so inert that SAAB had trialled is as an under body coating on their cars.. Anyway polyurethane is bombproof. So you are are going to get rid of loose rust and give it a hard scrubbing BUT DONT DEFORM THE PIPE SHAPE. `Treat it like a woman`. When the 6 days of polyurethane applications, 1 per day, have cured its a bloody strong pipe again. and chemically inert externally at least,... and stone chip proof because the p/u is very impact resistant. The petrol proof plastic pipe replacement alternative from Petrol specialists is over £120. The prob is the neck top, where the filler cap fits is quite sophisticated shape.. Its quite strong as a shape so the main prob is the plain pipe which is very tooooo thin..Germans didnt think of this taking such a hammering... bad design.. unusual for the Germans. Otherwise the enthusiasts are to make their own repro pipes..Cant understand why this is so difficult??????doest need to be in st/st??

Cheers dude, informative post. After six attempts I finally found a new filler cap
Not locking but at least the flap isn't poking out anymore.

New to the forum,
Bought my rocco few years back same thing had happened. But luckily the previous owner was an employee for vw/audi and spent alot of time on it.
He actually replaced the filler neck with a bmw one. The replacement is plastic. Only downside is that it is not original and that he had to modify the inside arch a little.
Not sure what bmw part he used but works ok. Just undersealed the whole underside and tank so all good.

Sorry to pull up an old thread but I have put up with a flappy flap exactly like this ever since I got my scirocco 8 years ago. I always just assumed that the neck had been put on wrong when I got it. Is there a definitive answer as to what cap will fix it? Someone said mk2 astra and someone else said mk2 polo? Will either of these definitely fit before I venture into the world of eBay?
