ive been tempted to buy another ford this week.....but the scirocco keeps telling me no when i open the garage!
i like having a car that nobody else owns,,,well ive not seen one other on the road since i bought mine
but im toying with selling it, what would be a realistic price for the car? its a 91 scala in great condition with brand new bbs replicas and new tyres, it has 7 months mot and is excellent inside and only one small rust spot by the drivers door handle,,,i may keep it just cant stay away from fords just fancy another cortina,, anyone got an idea on its value? cheers dan

For a start you would be well advised to put the original wheels back on and sell the BBS replicas seperate. Indeed people do like modded cars but I can say that they prefer to buy as original as possible as a starting point.

People will also buy on condition and provenance as well as model rariety, so the best cars will get the best price. On Sciroccos the bodywork is always going to cost the most to put right, most mechanical parts are still available and reasonable to buy. So getting the door fixed up may mean the difference between a sale or not!

Take a look in the for sale section on here, Ebay and other websites that sell cars for a idea of price and what has sold recently.

It's a difficult question

I'm currently selling a 91 scala ( look in the for sale section)

As Ian said mechanically mostly everything is available,I would say body work and condition underneath is more the key to pricing these cars. And rarer models demand more cash, storms, earlier gti's etc. also a good history on the car helps

Injections are more desirable and maybe worth a little more than a carb car of same condition, but the car I keep as my own and would never sell is a gt11 carb. Simply because its in such good condition body wise.

Simply the better the body work and more history there is, the more its worth, imho

Again as Ian said, look at the cars for sale and decide where yours fits into the price range

I think it's worth remembering it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Take into consideration what you would buy a car like this for and what others would pay.
Too many times on forums have I seen cars bought for less than a thousand that have had new rims, coil overs, big bore exhaust and a pancake k&n filter bolted on the carb go on for sale at over three grand!
The general term for it I think is scene tax.
If the body's in good nick and has a full service history then it should be between 800 and 1500 on face value ( will fluxuate with model and spec)
If it's had a documented nut and bolt rebuild to a very high standard then I would expect 5-6000.
And a dog of a car ( but still taxed and tested!) go for 4-500.
Generally with these cars origenality pays better money.
But if you find someone who's after a modded car then you may get top dollar.

I agree with what's been posted, I think some people ask quite a lot but, the price these cars fetch is generally very low. I know allready I wont get back what I'm spending on refurbing mine. What does anyone think about the trend though ? Are prices going up or down ? I'm thinking they're still dropping as they get older ?

thanks for the replys,,does make me laugh a bit,,ive sold some crap fords over the last few years as well as some minters
a crap ford for£3k and a superb scirocco for only £1500 baffling aint it!??? will use use it once the weathers better, think ill hang in for £1800ish, think its worth it.

Despite what I've done to my car I'd never buy anything modded unless it was "sensible" (lower strut brace etc). If you're looking for a project then you want something unmolested as you know you've got a good base.

the only mods on this car are the wheels, she has full history, and in fine condition, im a fussy bugger and only buy cars that have been unwelded or bodged, this one will find a home in time i suppose, no great rush :-D

been out in the garage tinkering today,,not gonna sell the car now, shes just so clean, and when you look around at whats available it makes sense to keep it, might sell me daily e class and buy a smaller merc instead

Not at all, quite the opposite.
I didn't build the Bandit to sell on, I built it for me. I built the car I wanted and I wanted it to handle, brake and ride better, not a Bodged car on an old chassis using parts from the spares bin (which the mk2 effectively is).
See, the major difference is that I can accept that some people want to stay original and that's cool. But I also love innovation and individuality which is why I love some of the modded cars I see at the shows.
Get five original cars lined up and you effectively have the same car in different coloura but one may be a bit shinier.
I walk along the line at the Nationals and I have dozens of personalised rides, each with their own character

You're missing my point, for you to be able to do what you want to do, other people have to 'keep it original' to keep you supplied with project material - I quote:

I don't think I did.
I'm cool with original if that's your bag, without it we'd be screwed. And they're essential for both the club and the National - I'd hate to have a car park full of modded cars there. and I can genuinely say I'd be incredibly reluctant to buy a properly unmolested example just to break it. I think most of us would agree with that.
But that's not what I want so I built what I wanted. And it'll out handle, out brake and generally out perform any original model it's out next to.
