Something a bit different
I got offered an accident damaged (rear ended) mk4 golf V5 today for next to nothing, got me thinking about squeezing the engine into the scirocco. I'll have the whole car at my disposal
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these engines in either a scirocco or mk1 golf. ie how difficult a conversion this might be?
I know a vr6 conversion is a bit of a pig to fit and a 20v turbo is a whole lot easier, but haven't came across much info on v5's
with 170bhp as standard might be worth considering,
what's the thoughts

Can't offer any practical advice but I'm very curious to know what 'next to nothing' is... :)

Re: Something a bit different
next to nothing is £200 which in car terms is next to nothing, once I'm finished with it,(if I go for it) I can weigh in what's left at a scrap metal merchant and get about £100 odd back.
Re: Something a bit different
Yes, that's pretty good considering what you could get off it. Even if you can't squeeze the V5 in (which seems unlikely), you'd surely make money just breaking it, which you could put towards something else.

Re: Something a bit different
my thoughts exactly
a v5 scirocco would be pretty cool and diferent, but if it's an arse to do, I could sell it all off and go down the 20v turbo route

My daily is a seat Toledo v5 10v nice lazy cruising engine, but does make a nice growl when you give it a boot full.

I like the sound of that.
I'm not looking for a road rocket but something that'll cruise nicely on motorways and I can have a little fun with.
What's the mpg etc like?

Re: Something a bit different
I looked into this a while ago and like you I couldn't find much info about it either. It has been done before but it isn't common. The general opinion I got was that for the weight of the engine and work involved getting it in you are as well going for the vr6 or the lighter 1.8t. On a more positive note the engine is very smooth and sounds awesome. And for that price it can't hurt to have a go even if just for the fact no one else would have one.
.
Plus if you break it and sell everything separately ie bare doors and all locks and window mechs etc you will easily make back the cost of the car. And probably pay for any parts needed for the conversion
Ben.

Re: Something a bit different
Depends how you drive it! Driving home from passing my hgv test, very good mood, ac/dc album on, nice quiet country roads I was getting 7.6 mpg. Sat at 55 on the motorway with the cruise on it'll easily to 40+ mpg, same thing but towing a loaded car trailer 22mpg, a full tanks worth of "normal" driving gives 29 - 30mpg. Its a big heavy car though, so I would expect it to be much better in a Rocco.G5 VWS wrote:What's the mpg etc like?
my only concern with fitting that engine would be that it would make the car rather front heavy. Some people who have done the vr6 conversion have complained about it.

Re: Something a bit different
I'm not overly worried about the handling side of things. I'm not one for throwing a car around country roads. Looking for something that'll cruise all day long, I find the original engine although capable on motorways it feels a little strained at 70ish
Economy is hell of a lot better than a vr6 and only 4bhp less (its a 20v v5).I was reading up on those vr6 conversions a lot. And seems a pretty similar conversion. Not the easiest but achievable.
I'm picking the v5 up on Sunday, so watch this space there may be a build thread very soon.

Re: Something a bit different
As an interesting (or not!) aside, the 20v v5 was fitted to some lpg powered forklifts, where it was tuned to produce a whopping 12bhp. Yes, twelve.
Re: Something a bit different
You could always counter the front-heavy by sticking the battery in the boot...

I bet it's was a torque monster though. I've seen a few commercial aircooled motors strangest application in combine harvesters of all things.Nate wrote:As an interesting (or not!) aside, the 20v v5 was fitted to some lpg powered forklifts, where it was tuned to produce a whopping 12bhp.
