Non-starter - resolved

Post by marcus »

After weeks of head-scratching and posts on this forum that will have bored many of you to tears, I finally got the bottom of my no-spark problem - it was indeed the ignition module I initially diagnosed at fault but all the subsequent mystery was down to something as crap as the pins in the TCI-H unit not connecting properly to the connector, perhaps the pins in the replacement unit are thinner or something... but hey, it starts!

Though now after sitting idle for six weeks I seem to have a radiator leak (wisps of steam) so I'll be posting something in the cooling forum!

Good news on the fix, not so good on the radiator though. Although is it definitely antifreeze leaking and not just condensation from standing for so long? Any signs of antifreeze crystals around the leaking areas?

Will have to have a look in daylight, was dark by the time I got it started, and looking by torchlight, couldn't even see where it was coming from, though seemingly from the front ie behind the fan cowling.

Glad you have got it started. If it was loose pins in the ignition module might this not be a problem when you hit a bump/pothole (plenty around!) of it coming loose again?

I hope that it is just condensation that is causing the wisps of steam, have you lost any coolant?

I'm hoping it's condensation too, no obvious coolant loss but then I didn't run it for longer than it took to get to temperature ie 10-15 minutes - and it was wisps rather than clouds, but we'll see...

Pins in the module weren't loose, the 'slots' in the connector had splayed (like a female spade terminal which has got too loose), so I bent them back together, fingers crossed.

The steam coming from the radiator happens to mine when its left standing at this time of year so more than likely just condensation just keep an eye on the coolant level.

Looks like you're right mark1gls, must have been condensation because I ran it to temperature today and not a trace of steam, thanks for the tip.
