Update - recommission at the Phirm is going to cost me the entirety of my restoration budget, so no bodywork tweaks for me.
To be honest i think it's going up for sale when I get it back to NI. I could be speaking in the heat of the moment here, but it caused me nothing but misery and devoured my money. I should have known better than to buy a car that had stood for ten years without being driven. I had my shiny-eyed 'Look! a silver pre-kit mark 2!' head on, not my sensible one.
hopefully i'll calm down and see sense soon....

rear shocks
upper mounts
rear brakes rebuilt
new brake lines
fuel lines
exhaust
water pump
fuel pump
coolant flush
outer CV boot
plus other stuff.
I can't do the jobs myself as have no tools, no space, and no expertise! i know you kindly offered to do a lot of this for me, and if I was staying in England I'd take you up on that. They told me that they're surprised it got through an MOT, and I don't want to be driving a deathtrap 300 miles to Liverpool.
i think I'm maybe not the type to fiddling around with old cars any more, they're too expensive to run!

Rick, further to our earlier conversation.
The rear suspension bearing rings (rubber donut things!) are the following:
Lower - 171 512 333 - £9.90 each (1 each side)
Upper - 171 512 335 - £8.30 each (1 each side)
You may need bump stops also which are 171 512 131A
All from VW Heritage and showing in stock (except the bump stop).

In fact, I think I have some of those parts sat in the garage. I've definately got a fuel pump and enough copper brake line to refit a battle cruiser.

The things to do on your car are mostly straight forward, rear suspension, rear brakes, water pump and coolant flush and outer CV boot can all be changed in a long day the fuel pump can be a pain to get off as all the connections etc rust nicely under there. Fuel pipes and brake pipes not had any experience with only the rubber hoses but as with all these things having the right tools speeds these thing up no end, I'm sure Ian has most of the tools needed for the job so a good weekend if all goes well and you should be back on the road.

I don't know how much the Phirm charge, but that list is no worse than a lot of MoT/service sheets I've seen. A competent local garage could handle all of it and I wouldn't expect it to cost more than £500.

I had a long chat with Rick earlier and some of the jobs don't need doing straight away but he is off back to the Emerald Isle at the end of the month so time is not on his side.

I think the only thing I'd be desperately worried about in that list if the brakes. Even I can rebuild rear brakes - but I heartily recommend the brake spring tool from Draper to save a lot of time and knuckle skin.
I would definitely recommend getting at least one other opinion. Try the good garage scheme website if you don't know any good local garages.

Cheers guys. Calmed down a bit now. i want to keep this car and make it one of the best and most original Mk2s in the country. But my main concern is that i won;t have time to get it up to Ant for the wheel arches and the valance. It will probably be the case that there is someone in Northern Ireland that will be able to do it, but Ant is THE man for these things, and has all the parts there ready to go too.
Ian said to me yesterday that if it drove from Kent to London, then from there to Hook, it can't be that bad. plus it has an MOT.
i think what needs done are the coolant flush, the rear brake rebuild and the rear suspension, which is collapsed on one side and is pure rust. it also needs a new exhaust which i am sure i can order to be delivered to them for fitting. it actually, somehow, has a very good and very new cambelt fitted, which is news to me.
hopefully that should keep the costs down a bit. but time is of the essence.
there still is a part of me thinks that I should maybe go for something a bit later, like something with a DX engine and that doesn't need bodywork fettling. I was spoiled rotten with my last Scirocco - it was as solid as a rock underneath.
