Checking and adjusting camber

Post by mark1gls »

Easy way to check the camber of the front wheels.
Losen wheel nuts, jack one side of the car up and take the wheel off. Place a block of wood and another trolly jack under the end of the wishbone (I could not jack up from the ball joint as the metal brake guard was stopping me putting the wood any further long the wishbone)

Get the car level by adjusting the jack under the wishbone, as the other side is on its wheel you should be at normal ride hight.
I did check the level in many places to make sure the front slamp panel was level.

Jack for lifting the car and the other jack under the wishbone.

Push down a couple of times on the side you are adjusting and leave the car to settle for a few minutes.
Then you can check the camber angle. I used a spirt level and turned the brake disc around to check its flat on the hub and I was getting the same angle. I also placed the sprit level on the end of the hub but the driveshaft sticks out a little so could not put the level flat across the middle but you can just fit it on the edge and I had the same angle on the brake disc as the hub.

Mine was slightly out so losen the bottom bolt and losen the top bolt with the adjuster and turn it till the wheel is level, tighten up the bolts and re check still level.

When lowering the car onto the jack under the wishbone do this slowly as the wishbone is on an angle and the wood could slip off the jack if you are not careful.

Move round to the other side and do it all again.

is the camber supposed to be zero degrees?
i thought you needed a bit of negative camber to go round corners properly?

Should be 0 degrees when wheels are straight, when you go around a corner the wheels do lean into the corner that's why you check it with the wheels straight.
You can put a little negative camber if you wish but your tyres will start to wear out on the inside.
