92 Scala occasional clutch slip

Post by theboybailey »

Morning all,

Having got my old Scirocco back in the summer and back on the road in November , I haven't really been anywhere in it, until yesterday I took it for a little blast in the country.

Now over the past 4 weeks driving around town I have never noticed the clutch slipping however every now and then yesterday, it slips from sort of 3000 revs upwards, not in all gears and not every time.

Any ideas?

If it is a clutch what sort of number of hours is required for a garage?

The ist of jobs on this car seems to be growing, as to be expected really

If anyone fancies a day on it to earn over on the east coastsome Christmas pennies let me know

Cheers Warren

Is the clutch very heavy?
where abouts in the pedal travel is the bite point?

Have a look underneath, are there any signs of oil leaking where the engine joins the gearbox

Hi Nate,

No oil leak on the box any more ideas?

Could old gearbox oil cause a slip?

Oil on the clutch plate would cause it to slip!

A crude way of checking if it is slipping is to park the car up with the handbrake fully applied, put the car into 4th gear and rev to 3000rpm, then slowly release the clutch, it the car doesn't stall then the clutch is goosed!
Mind, make sure you are not parked against a wall or other vehicles!
Like I said this is a crude method.

A good mechanic with the right tools can change a clutch in a few hours, the best I have seen was 50 minutes, this was a bloke with over 35 years experience of VW's with a garage full of tools.
The last clutch I bought was a LUK clutch from GSF, new release bearing and gearbox cap came to just under £50, so not a bank breaker.

Hi,

Check where the cable goes through the bulkhead, sounds like the cable is being pinched somewhere.

If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!
