Paintwork cutting back

Post by go-for-it1 »

Can any of you detailing obsessed dudes recommend a gentle cutting compound? My OH has just had her Mk5 Golf front wings replaced under warranty after they rusted and the bonnet is now an ever so slightly different colour as it is faded and wasn't blended in. The colour difference is hardly noticeable, (she hasn't noticed it, but I have!!) so I am worried that T Cut would be too harsh and make it worse. I have never used any other cutting products so if anybody has had good experiences with anything or can give me a good method to use then I would appreciate some useful pointers.

Listen mate, if she hasn't noticed it - leave well alone! The only thing you can do in this scenario is fail by making matters worse.

If you're not happy with it, take it back!

compound will only clean up the lacquer. the faded paint wont change, just be brighter.

I agree with Nate. If it's being done under warranty, it should be as good as new.

The warranty work was to replace the rusty wings, car is 9 years old and I believe they sprayed and laquered them up before fitting so no spray work once fitted! I didn't expect them to blend as VW were paying for half of it (don't ask!!) and the job is a very good match with the doors, as the paintwork on the rest of the car is good, but I know the bonnet has been sprayed in the past to sort stone chips. Just thought I would try and get a good polish on the bonnet to improve the match but having looked at it again it would probably be a waste of time as I wouldn't be touching the paint would I, only the laquer?

I don't think you'll effectively change the colour of the paint whatever you do. If it was a colour that is prone to fading, like solid red, then cutting would help restore the original colour.
