gear linkage adjustment

Post by type53b »

hi, i bought a gear linkage bush set off flea bay to sort out my fairly sloppy gear change. a pita to fit but got there eventually. any way the gearchange is more positive now , however beforehand engaging reverse was push the lever down and up and to the left. but now it seems to slip into reverse everytime i go for 1st gear. where have i gone wrong?

remember, if it's got tit's or tyre's, sooner or later it's gonna give you trouble.

It sounds like you have not got the long rod aligned properly. You may be only one or two splines out. There is a picture in Haynes, if I remember correctly, showing some dimensions at the underneath of the gear lever for correct alignment.

ok thank you. i will read up on it tonite. but i did not disturb the long rod at all cos there was no bushings for it in the kit i bought.so i just left it alone. :ok:

are you sure everything is back on the way it came off because it shouldn't change if you didn't move the spline'd bit at the front of the main rod
sometimes the spring goes that holds the gearlever up and you have to pull up for it not to go in reverse but its unlikeley to have broken at the same time you did the bushes

i take it you mean the pinchbolt at the front of the main rod. i didnt open this bolt as i didnt have the bushing for it,u know the one that the rod passes thru or the bushings for the bottom of the gearlever. i think i might have to take it apart again to sort it out! :dash:
