overheating

Post by philstar »

Hey guys. my 1.8GT is overheating, I have replaced:
  • water pump
    thermostat
    radiator fan
I have also had the head skimmed and checked.

the radiator is definitely flowing, however the car continues to heat up, I don't let it reach the 3/4 mark. If it gets near to that it begins to judder...

Any ideas what it could be?

Does the fan actually come on? Did you change the switch when you changed the fan?

Did you bleed the system after you changed all the parts you have stated?

Also is the heater in the car blowing hot air?

Yeah the fan is working, the sensor has been checked and is fine, the coolant is fresh and bled properly. The heater blows super hot air so I'm SUPER toasty during the summer as I have it on constantly to keep the temperature down!!!

Next thing I would be looking at is timing, check all the timing marks when you put the cambelt on after the head was skimmed, then check the engine timing, advance it till it pinks under load then back it off a little so it stops pinking.

did you have the correct thermostat?
have you checked the top hose and bottom hose going to the radiator are heating up to check thermostat is opening? if bottom pipe is allways cool the thermostats no good
also where did you buy it from?
my last one came from gsf and it made my car overheat.
i took it out and put it in a pan of boiling water and it wouldnt open.
took it back and bought a genuine vw one and checked it in water first before fitting and that one opened ok.

I have had the car setup professionally on a rolling road as well, it runs sweet as a nut to be fair. The radiator is working, I did get the thermostat form GSF.

I think my next plan of action is to just bite the bullet and buy a new rad, and take out the thermostat, test it, they're only a tenner.

This is frustrating me

I put a new rad in mine last year from these guys. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ybcarsuk/RADIA ... =397402152

No issues with it so far. The brand is Scandinavian or something like that I looked into it at the time.

Ye timing will definitely cause overheating like mark says.

Have you actually confirmed that its overheating not just a faulty gauge or sensor?

Where abouts are you? Maybe someone nearby will come help you?

Please remember that i'm no tecnocrat but i've had similar problems in the past with the radiator cap?

black ones are a definite no no and some of the blue ones can be iffy too.

worth trying as relatively cheap and at least then you've eliminated it?
