FRONT COILOVER TOP SUSPENSION CAP / MOUNT QUESTION?

Post by SMITHERZ »

Hi All,

I am fitting aftermarket IOM coilovers to my 1988 Scirocco GT. My question is do I need the old top cap shown in the picture? The new front suspension strut seems to have a machined aluminium top cap. Do I just use the new one or do I have to use them both?

I have mocked it up without the old tops caps and it seem to sit fine! I have currently only got the supsension wound down around 20%. I can't wait to get the new wheels on and dial in the stance!

All info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Something Is not right with the top of that suspension!
I'm sure you are supposed to have 2-3 inch thread extra to go through the supension turret to fix on the inner rubber mount + top cap and nut.
I used the original top mount as the rubber top mount sits better against the wheel arch

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

Thanks for the reply!

There is loads of thread on the top of the threaded section at the top of the coilover, the locking nut in the picture is only finger tight, once on the car, the spring compressed and allowed plenty of thread to poke through and the nut attached fine!

I did think about re-using the rubber and the original cap. Does this mean I really have a choice?...

1. Use the new provided aluminium top cap.
2. Use the old top cap along with the rubber mount.

I guess this confirms whether or not I should be using both tops caps at the same time!?!... Hmmm decisions decisions!

Thanks again!
