Mk2 roof racks ????

Ok need a roof rack for my surf board to put on my 89 scala what's the best to go for?
And has anyone had any experience with roof racks
Just need some advise as I don't want to waste money on rubbish ones

Vw did sell roof bars to go on the mk2 if you can find them.

I used to use Halfords "cheap" kind. They need you to remove the rubber strips from the roof, which exposes a mini-gutter (for want of a better description) which the rack feet clamp to. Do this carefully, and store them flat if you want to stand any chance of re-fitting!

The book in Halfords says you need a fitting kit as well as the bars, but look closely at the kit, and you'll find that 10 mins with the saw/grinder will make the standard feet (supplied with the bars) look identical!

I've got some cheap Mont Blanc ones on mine i think. Only cost about £30 or £40 iirc. Got them about 3 years ago and although the black has faded to grey, they dont look too bad and are still secure.

I have a set of original scirocco roof rails, im open to reasnable offer. Im in Warwickshire if you can collect, postage is fine but might be awkward.

Reviving this thread, my ‘84 Scirocco came from the dealer with a roof rack package according to the documentation I’ve inherited. My question is if the VW system utilized the “rails” on top of the roof covered by the rubber strip or hooked underneath the door rain gutter. Pics I’ve looked up are conflicting, seems Thule and Yakima racks hook under the roof. I’d love to find something that uses the built in roof rails. Does anyone have any insight here? For practical reasons understand I’m in North America. Thank you friends
