What's this connector for?

Hi folks,

So I was working on the Rocco again today, and I've been reminded of a little mystery I never solved on my Golf... What's this connector by the gearbox for? Both my Golf and Scirocco have it, and it's not connected to anything, nor is there anything nearby to connect it to. So far I've seen one dodgy diagram in German that perhaps suggests it's used for diagnostics using a multimeter, but I don't understand German so that's just me speculating



Anyone here know what it does?

What model and year car and what colour is the wire? Nothing to do with diagnostics. Most likely a sensor wire.

It's an '88 Scirocco Scala on a carb, 1.8 litre lump in it. My '91 Mk2 Golf Driver also has this wire in it, hanging in the same spot over the gearbox. The Golf is also on a carb, so one thing I thought was maybe it was a redundant piece of wiring meant for the set up in a fuel injected model. However, the diagram I saw it being checked with an ammeter in was from a Pierburg related manual

I've got the same wire randomly sitting the engine bay, I noticed it after I changed the engine and couldn't find anything to fit it too, haha!

I think it's got something to do with the pierburg carb.

i think it's either for the inlet manifold hedgehog or it's for the carb heater on the pierburg. should get +12v on it when the ignition is on

On my Golf the autochoke heater gets it's live feed from the coil pack, and the hedgehog has it's live feed coming from somewhere in that area too. The heater on the front of the carb gets it's live feed from over where the 2 connectors for the the thermo time valve etc. are coming from on the left of the bay. Everything on the Pierburg is connected up, and this plug by the gearbox is just hanging loose. I don't actually think it can reach the carb anyway, I don't think it's long enough. Really bugs me seeing it there and not knowing what it's for

Same wire fitted to my GT2 but its not as noticeable because the outer cable is tie wrapped to the cabling going to the red and grey sensors and the red connector on the end is taped up with black insulating tape. It doesn't do anything useful afaik.
