Track rod end MK2 1992 1.8 carb GTII

Post by den »

Hi all
Got a problem! Renewing a driveshaft and when putting things back together I find that the track rod ball joint bolt is turning with the lock nut as I tighten. I was able to tighten it up to a point where I now can't unscrew the nut either. I might have inadvertently got some grease into the joint. Any suggestions for a fix, please?

You can use a pry bar to push the joint back together while you tighten it. If your lucky. You might need an air gun tho. Or just cut it off and fit a new ball joint. Probably easier.

Do the nut up a little more then hit the top of the track rod end with a hammer, the bolt fits in to a tapered socket so it should lock in place then you should be able to undo the nut.
This has happened to me a couple of times.

Hi Guys
Tried again. No joy. Ended up cutting out the rubber boot, clamping the exposed joint with a mole and undoing the lower nut. Trashed the ball joint of course but reckoned would be less trouble fitting a new one.
Thanks again.

Bit late now. If this problem occurs again, put a jack under the outer end of the wishbone and jack this to put the weight of the car through the balljoint. This will lock it up so that you can tighten the nut.
